Beginners is the first major theatrical film release directed by renowned graphic artist/video director/film director and iconic figure, Mike Mills. Mike co-wrote Beginners loosely based on vivid memories of his childhood and distorted growth through adulthood."The original score work, "Beginner's Suite," was a true collaboration, mostly between Dave Palmer and Roger Neill, with Brian Reitzell," says Mills on the side lines pointing this way and that. "I remember trying to get something with the romanticism and dreaminess of a George Delarues score, but building it with the more simple notes and harmonies of Jelly Roll Morton's "Buddy Bertrand's Blues." I don't know if this really made any sense to Dave and Roger, but it a great experience watching them try things, taking turns on the piano, each suggesting this note not that one, a real transformative blend of Dave's deep knowledge of blues piano and Roger's classical ear, with Brian's great instincts as all around band leader and producer -- all recorded on a beautiful old Bluezner stand up piano that was a favorite of Henry Mancini's."

A Great Album for a Great Movie.
Beginners was a beautiful film, with universal themes of loss, love, and mourning. The music just fit so seemlessly in the movie, having the soundtrack isn't a bad idea to narrate your day to day life. I use it to drive, to walk, and to think. It's been interwoven in my life. The digital booklet is a nice touch and provides more insight to the movie. That being said, some songs just don't work past the concept of the film. If you loved the film and want the ending theme of Beginners in your library, go on ahead. But as a stand alone title, it can be hit or miss for certain people, hence the 4 stars.

very nice
This is a very nice collection of music. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars because I am not crazy for some of the Baltic music. But I loved the Oriental and much of the other songs. This collection is 3 disk set and is well formatted.

For fans
Great movie; soundtrack is for fans of the movie. Somewhat like the soundtrack from Water for Elephants, Beginners has some appeal if you liked the film.

Great movie/Great soundtrack
Old time tin pan alley with some early swing. In-fill music written for the movie blends in well- who would have thought that Bach's cello sonatas would sound so good played on the French horn. Well worth it.

Fabulous movie
Wonderful sound track. Very 1930's, romantic, fabulous music. Perfect for, dare I write this, background music. Really loved this CD, brings back Reinheart and other musicians of that ilk.

A bit of nostalgia.
I love this soundtrack. It reminds me of one of my favourite films. Its good to listen to in the background and there is a range of jazz including the pieces written specifically for the film. I'm no expert on jazz musicians but I do know that listening to this made me go off and find out more about some of the people who made the original songs.

Fab Album
I added this album to my basket and it sat there for weeks before I decided to purchase as I have been dissapointed so many times. But not this time! This is an absolutely fantastic compilation
