Waiting for Peace of Mind
Installation is a nightmare, even for professionals. The unit came without a vital part called a harness that has places in it to run wiring to the electric box. Without it, loss of power is not registered to the generator even with automatic transfer switch. It also causes a notice that the battery is low which it isn't, it's fully charged. Generac says they only handle technical issues and Amazon Concierge says that, if not included on the parts list it's not their concern. It is an integral part of the unit, just not on our unit.Other tests indicate that the unit itself works just fine.

I just got it all connected up and tested, ...
I just got it all connected up and tested, so I haven't had a chance to see how it works in a power outage. My main gripe is the plastic covers breaking. When the cover was held open I bumped it and the hinge snapped off, also when the electricians were wiring it up, the tab on access cover broke off..

Worth the peace of mind.....
I did not purchase the generator from Amazon, but, I did purchase it from a Gernerac dealer. They were local and they installed it. I called into Gernerac from a TV add info-mercial. It was installed in September of 2015. I have not had to utilize the generator yet. The total price I paid for complete installation including the generator was $7000. I also purchased a service contract for 5 years for $1000. The generator must be serviced every year for oil and filter change and every 2nd year a new battery. Guageing from the price quoted on this page, I must have paid at least this much to the dealer for the generator and the balance must have been for labor costs. I must say, I could not have done this by myself. They came at 8:30 am and finished by 2:00 in the afternoon. There were 2 plumbers and 3 men installing the unit. It was worth the money to hire this install. They offered financing, as well. Consider the food you have in the freezer or what you would do if there was a blizzard and there was no electricity. It will pay for itself if any of these emergencies occur. We live in Tornado Ally, so I'm sure, as long as my house does not blow away, that I will be glad I did this.

Autostarted on it's weekly cycle for one year. When I needed it, it did not auto start. Now it won't start to weekly cycle.
I have had it for a little over a year. Bought through Home Depot and installed by a company in another state, the installers hired by Home Depot. The install was fine and well done.It stopped doing it's weekly cycling when it was less than a year old. I was told someone would be in contact with me for a yearly service warranty. That never happened. I finally found out who to get in touch with and called them three times. Then never sent me anything they promised to.I finally found a valid Generac dealer here who does service contracts and have set up a yearly maintenance plan. They say the battery is fine. When I really needed the Generac to work.. ( which has only been one time in a year ) it failed to auto-start. I had to manually go outside and press the MANUAL button a few times to get it to start.Today I was thinking I had not heard it power cycle in a few weeks. Sure enough I went outside and the red light was on it. I presses auto and it would not start. I AGAIN.. had to press the Manual button about 3 times to get this thing to start. If it takes all this to get it to work after one year, I can imagine the piece of crap it will be in 5 years.I am now wishing I had chosen another manufacturer.

and the amount of anxiety wondering what the power out game plan was going to look like in action
I have most of the vacation house on the system, I have the gas only model for the full time home. I bought this unit primarily because winter ice issue to deal with almost every year. Prior to getting the generator, I have had varying degrees of sucess with portable generators, with a few times our generator did not even start, and the amount of anxiety wondering what the power out game plan was going to look like in action. As far as installation goes, most electricians are going to charge anywhere from $500 to $1000 for transfer box, and then the plumber to hook up the gas line. Gas has to be ran to the unit, so unless you have an existing gas line already in place, the plumber has to lay pipe and your natural gas. Total cost for install was just under $1500.The unit looks great, self tests every week, and providing I maintain the unit, it should last many yearsSince it is powered by natural gas, it is relatively quiet to the gasoline powered generators in the neighborhood. It was trouble free and gave very even output no matter what the load was on the unit with its 20 circuits. For a 2500 square foot home, including the hot tub equipment, it powers about 80% of the devices (lights, water pump, heat pump, electronics / tv / satellite ) and makes staying in the home easy while my neighbors either went to hotels or struggled with their portables, refilling their tanks every 6 to 12 hours of use.I did not buy them at the same time. I wanted to make sure the first one would work reliably before getting another one. So far so good.

Piece of Mind
I as well did not purchase this through Amazon, I could not force myself in paying $1500 or more for the install.Did it myself, took me 22 hours to install. not sure why install is such a secret.? maybe I could do it in half the time now.I did the gas, electric, gas line check, water column check, and purchased a GENPAD. the Gen starts and runs great.Just need to change the oil to 5-30 synthetic oil for the mid-west weather. I also got the heat pads or the battery and Oil filter.anyways what a great generator and now having the piece of mind that when I am not home it will start up and run my sump pumpsand whatever else. Thanks Generic for a great product !!!

cheap,/ poor design
welcome to the "Home Depot" of generators. Hope that you don't have a snow storm with heavy snow as it can aspirate the snow into the air filter and clog it, causing failure at the worst possible time..........They may have fixed the problem by now but make sure you don't have an air intake right above the battery. The battery compartment is like a wind tunnel and the air intake for the engine is way too close to this "jet steam" allowing it to suck in the snow.
