Impressive Map a Europe during the Great War
What strikes you about this high-quality map of Europe in 1915 is the fewness of countries there and the size of the empires that then existed: Germany stretches from Metz (now in France) all the way to Memel (now in Lithuania); the empire of Austria-Hungary goes from the Tyrol (now in Italy) to Lemberg or Lwow (now in the Ukraine) and from Prague down to Serbia and to half-way through Rumania; Poland only exists around Warsaw and is part of the Russian Empire, as is the whole of Finland; and the Turkish Empire stretches, as it does now, from Greece, but goes all the way down to Egypt and to Kuwait. As for Blighty? Well, we are both Great Britain and the whole of Ireland! Israel does not yet exist - the Balfour Declaration being yet in the future and the prospect of its return but a pipedream. Mountain ranges and borders are helpfully drawn in and coloured. I wonder how Europe and the Middle East will look a hundred years from now (2021)? A really worthwhile purchase to get the features and atmosphere of Europe at the start of the Great War.
