Exonomical prepolish for tumbling rocks
I recently switched to AO for stage three of rock tumbling (this product) from silicon carbide 600 grit and I'm glad I did. I use a vibratory tumbler for stages 2-4, and so require much less abrasive, and time, than with a rotary tumbler. This product, compared to SiC, gives a superior pre-polish to the point I could almost get away without further tumbling- almost. I am using microalumina for polishing in lieu of standard grade cerium and here, too, I am getting superior results. Give this technique a try. You should also know that the Rock Shed is a long-established lapidary supplier with reasonable pricing. Check out their website.
