There was no padding and no instructions. Be carful of you table!
Great and solid piece! Took it out and only needed to attach the distal arm. Once I got it on the table and clamped down, I realized there is a screw that protrudes through the plate where the distal arm attaches. This left a very noticeable circle indent in my table. I took two felt strips and cut them to size for the table top and bottom, used tacky glue to attach layers together and then to the metal. Worked like a charm after! Minimal shake, and noise, and easy to turn. Did have to guide yarn with other hand but very quickly got into a rythm and did about 20 balls of yarn in a couple of hours. Must say this is my first yarn winder and I’m glad I got it this model.

Instructions would be nice
It works really well AFTER you figure out where the additional arm goes. I'm not sure how hard it would have been to include instructions. Even the pictures of the winder do not show where it goes. After watching a youtube video I finally saw where it goes. Just make sure you put the washer between the arm and the wing nut!

It's exactly what I needed
I had read many reviews about all kinds of ball winders. The main thing that stuck out to me was "buy the one with the metal gears"... I'm glad I did. It's easy to use and makes a great cake.

What a great investment
We originally purchased the 4 ounce ball winder to Dave money, but returned it for this 10 ounce ball winder. Generally we'll made. Definitely highly recommend for the serious crocheter!

Easy & Sturdy, I Guess
I had to have 2 of these delivered because the first arrived without the large wire yarn guide in packaging that had seen better days. Also, I suppose the seller/manufacturer has decided the set-up and use is self-explanatory because no directions for anything were included. YouTube is a wonderful thing.I've wound about 5 skeins of yarn and it works great. I think any downsides of using it have to do with the limitations of any yarn winder, not this one in particular, like having the yarn wrap around the top of the spool instead the yarn ball when going slowly or when you start up again after detangling yarn coming from the skein. The large wire guide rattles a lot on the table while you're winding, so I taped it to the table a little to give it a little added support and use my hand to help guide the yarn from the skein into the wire guide. The metal gears look like they'd last forever and move pretty smoothly (I may add a little silicone to help it truly glide - I haven't decided yet). I'm happy I purchased it and would recommend it.

Great Value
It is a little harder to use than my 3.5oz winder but it is a great value for a 10oz winder. No instructions included but plenty of tutorials on YouTube. Check that your table does not have a large lip that would prevent the winder from clamping down. Also do not use on a "nice" table. The bolt that holds down the outer arm may scratch the table.

Great so far, a little noisy
I bought this cake winder to replace a smaller plastic version...as I wanted the larger capacity. The other was 4oz and this one is 10oz which allows you to make a single cake out of larger skeins of yarn. It is very sturdily built, runs smoothly and makes good firm cakes. It does tend to stop if any resistance to the yarn flowing smoothly, whereas my plastic one was a bit stronger in that regard but I am not afraid of this one breaking if I push to hard etc. It is noisier than my little one, but not a problem in the slightest. Fast and smooth, especially after a bit of lubricant sprayed on the gears. It also has a larger throat to mount to thick counters and tables, bigger than my plastic one would fit.

Works great so far
The media could not be loaded. Just got it today but it seems very sturdy and does what it's supposed to do.

Surprisingly Well-built
I had very low expectations, but was pleasantly surprised at how heavy duty this winder is. I've done almost my entire stash of yarn in the past week...worsted, chinky, wool, some weird pom-pom stuff from the 80s...it has zipped through every type of yarn in my collection. My one and only comaint is the ends of the little loops you feed the yarn through are sharp and I've had it catch and cut through some of the more fragile yarn. It would be nice if those burrs were smoohed out (hence the 4 stars). I would like 3.5 oz winder as well, but I can't find anything with this quality.

Love it!
I really like this yarn winder, it makes my yarn stash more manageable plus I like yarn cakes that give you a centre pull (much easier to work with). Most of the yarn winder is made from metal giving it a sturdy reliable feel to it, the only plastic is the cone part where the yarn spins around and collects. The yarn comes off the cone easily. It only takes about 5 minutes to do a 7oz ball. I did have to go to youtube to find out how to setup and use this particular winder.

Just buy it. Seriously.
I hummed and hawed over buying one for the longest time. Did a lot of research and finally bought this one. It was just under $50 and it brings me so much joy every time I’ve pulled it out to use it.At first it would skip on me every now and then and I asked my dad to help me figure out the gears. We think that the one washer was put on the wrong side when assembled on the bottom gear. So we swapped it and it has worked like a charm! My dad was super excited about testing it out then and he wound three skeins for me while I held the yarn. My three year old nephew was absolutely thrilled that he could help me wind my yarn (he helped me with about 10 skeins of cotton and was asking if I had more…). So yes, even small children can use it (while supervised - the gears might catch little fingers!) and even with their inconsistent winding the balls were in really good shape and I didn’t rewind any he did with me. And then my FIL also got involved because I was too cheap to buy a swift and it kept getting caught from my hank that I wrapped on some chair legs.So that’s it ladies, I’ve had three males be absolutely thrilled about this gadget and the two dads gave their approval of it being “quite an impressive little tool.” So no matter who you are, your significant other or even your family might get in on it with you and your entire collection can be done in only a few DAYS rather than DAYS!
