A merry christmas tale
This version of the movie was delivered on time and came with English subtitles I know a few people complained it didn't. This movie is French humour at it's best! A Christmas tale of sorts with characters you grow attached too...actually scrap that you laugh at these people and as for Christmas tale it's more of a farce a joyful witty farce if one ever existed this is it!! Recommend this movie....highly...

English black comedy with a French flavour
This film is like an English black comedy with a French flavour. If the story took place in an English city – not necessarily London – it's humour would be in keeping with the tradition of English black comedies. However the approach would have been softer and more subtle. In an English version, the action would have been understated with an unexpected twist at the end. This film attempts this approach but starts off very excitable and continues to a crescendo towards the end. There are a number of scenarios that could have been developed, but suddenly stop going any further. The characters are more caricature than could have been seen as normal. It's not a bad film and there are funny moments, but it doesn't really sit comfortably in any genre.

Too funny! French classic
My favourite french movie. My french teachers told me this is a classic Christmas movie and every french person knows it. It's hilarious and one of those you want to watch again and again. I definitely recommend it!!!

Alright but not great!
This was loaned to us on DVD by a friend and we got 45 mins in and the DVD refused to play further. Being intrigued, I ordered a copy for us so we could see the whole film. We love a bit of 'off the wall' comedy, especially when it's eccentrically French but this didn't really do it for us. It's not a bad film and there are devotees out there who love every minute but we found it over-long and a bit short on laughs especially in the second half. There are some stand-out funny moments (particularly the lady in the broken lift using a child's tool kit to try and fix it) but it doesn't quite hang together. If you're after something funny and French, other than the classics (Tati, et al) try "Bievenue Chez Les Ch'tis".

An experience...
My French teacher said this was worth viewing because of its cultural influence, but if you do watch it (and you're English) don't expect to understand half of the humour! I watch a lot of French language films including many comedies, and normally really enjoy them. This one was just a bit too different to my own sense of humour. But I've given it three stars because there are some good bits, and it was certainly an experience! BTW not one to see with the children - lots of fruity expletives.
