Great book
My 10 year old sadly has been learning about the difference between herself and her classmates. She recently has been asking about the beauty of being black or why I refuse to straighten her hair. As I explained to her slavey and Jim Crow she seemed surprised so this was one of the books I chose for her to read to learn her culture and how we have overcame huge obstacles in our history. It's my job to teach my children our history because the schools won't.

Story for all to enjoy.
Great story to share with young people to help children understand what experiences our elders had when growing up in a time where all was not equal.

read aloud book
This is a book I read to first and second graders for library story time. Older students remember it and check it out later. Our school is religious based with a diverse student body. The story and the illustrations keep the attention of the listeners. They find the little girl's interpretation and reactions to the events quite understandable. The children ask questions and discuss what happened so that they end up with an idea of civil rights and segregation in everday life.

The Innocence of children, the reality of life
A sweet but important book. I hate to read it to my grandchildren only because they are not aware of the horrible history of race in this country, and it will be a shame to break their bubble. Beautiful illustrations and a poignant story.

.
This is a wonderful book. Cute but very meaningful. Great for young readers. And even greater if parents or grandparents would read it to their children/grandkids.
