A broad view of WW 1.
Excellent review material for the war written for the world not just the northwestern part of France. The book puts the first part of the 20th century world war into a perspective that stimulates concern for our present century.

A very useful work
Many different authors give detailed reviews of areas of research concerning WWI. The writing style of some is less stimulating than those of others. There are areas that might have been addressed such as the nature of how Pacifists experienced the war on both sides, the course of the War in the Dominions of Great Britain and how they were altered by the war as well as the nature of the Jewish conflicts in the war with Christians, as well as with fellow Jews. Women dealing with the home front are addresses, but little deals with women at the front. Arnold Zweig's The Face of European Jewry and other resources (S. Ansky's The Enemy at His Pleasure) touch this shadowy area. Similar attention could be made to Africans serving in France and their life, though I am less certain regarding resources available there.Often, History becomes limited to the White, Christian soldier and the politician. It suffers from this frequently.

A good overview of the war
This is a collection of 24 essays, covering various aspects of the pre-war period, the war itself, and the post-war period. If you know nothing about WW I, you won't get very much out of this book. Indeed, to fully appreciate the analysis and opinions provided by the contributors, a firm grasp of modern European history (eg, beginning at 1848) is helpful. With that in mind, the book was an easy read, the contributors generally writing concisely and with little jargon. I learned no small amount about the war, and several contributors provided insights that had not previously come to mind. A couple of observations about reading the Kindle version: first, the text is only about ⅔ of the book; the remaining third contains a few maps and a huge bibliography. And have a decent map of Europe next to your chair when you're reading; flipping between the text and the maps became tiresome.

A deeper look at World War One
Hew Strachan is a widely respected British historian of World War One. Very few wars have had such broad impact on European Society. It saw the dissolution of four empires: the German, the Austro-Hungarian, the Russian and the Ottoman. In this compilation, Strachan includes twenty or so chapters, each written by a different historian, covering military, economic, social, political, ant theater aspects of the first global conflict of the 20th century. There is some repetition, but the book does an excellent job of describing how all encompassing the Great War was. This is not an introductory summary, but rather a much deeper look into the war's participants and the economic, social, and political impacts of their participation.

The Many-sided War
I liked the academic approach to examining World War I. This book could appeal to Readers who seek to move beyond purely military accounts. My rating reflects my opinion that this work could have wide appeal.

Well put together book. We are using it for the Indiana Social Studies Academic Super Bowl this year. My students are finding it challenging but still interesting.

Boring
Don't buy this unless you like dry, uninspired text books with more bibliography that substance.

WWI 100 years later
The Oxford Illustrated History is a great look @ WWI, 100 years later. It is updated and refreshed by some of the GREATEST MINDS on the subject. The section on the Turkish ivolvement by Dr. Ulrich Trumpaner is particularly revealing and full greatinformation.. This volume is a great great reference fo anyone who is a student on Modern Warfare.

A well written and informative overview
This is a series of articles written by recognised academics in the field. It takes a thematic, rather than a chronological, approach to the war. Thorough and well written, it is particularly useful if you are wish to understand the broader issues and themes relating to the war. However, if you want to understand the key battles in detail then you would be better looking at the Osprey "Essential Histories" series.
