Installed great between my Windows 7 units and working as expected. However, my old vista x64 bit computers no longer receive windows updates, Microsoft is responsible for this, as both computers gave the same error after one of Microsoft's last successful updates, now get 'Cannot get Windows updates', or something like that, both vista computers now remain on 'Searching for Updates', for days, and never find anything. So, I downloaded the recommended file that StarTech as they ask us to do, in came in the form of a Microsoft KB...file, which is the type file that Microsoft, sends their windows updates on, thus (again), when I tried to execute this file on both Vista x64 bit computers, it continues to SEARCH for the UPDATES, which it has for over 8 hours now... I cannot find a direct download for this StarTech requested file to circumvent the problem, it appears that I will not be able to use StarTech's USB3Link on my Vista computers, unless they come up with a way to update Vista computers without using the Windows Update function, so I am back to using my forever, slow, USB drives and flash drives to move the files. Let me say, I am impressed with StarTech's USB3link on my Windows 7 units, it is super fast, I suspect my new win7 has usb3.1 capability, my first attempt to transfer a 8 GB file from my primary pc to the laptop, took a about 1 to 2 seconds, I've never seen such speed, my new computer is usb 3.1 capable, and 3.1 speed is enabled in my new bios, but, even though I have 2 usb 3.1 ports (rear), that also, take usb 3.0 connectors, I had used my usb 3.0 port, and still moved the 8gb in a couple of seconds, not sure if that is because of StarTech USB3Link, or my computer. Excellent and fast product.

No need to install any drivers (on Windows nor Linux). When the cable is plugged into the PC, new removable drive become available with the transfer utilities and other materials.

Poor instructions and clunky user interface. Resulted in deleting 25 years of data. No support in helping locate where the deleted files went. Better off getting a external hard drive and transferring files.

On the face of it it has to be acknowledged that this device does indeed do what it claims to, and for that I give it 3 stars. Yet I still found the device to be very disappointing in terms of its performance and the manner in which it does what it does. Using the device between my Windows 7 desktop machine and Windows 8.1 laptop machine I achieved a consistent 35 MB to 40 MB per second transfer performance. The lower transfer rate was associated with the transferring of lots of smaller files and so a lot of operating system file management overhead, whereas the faster transfer rates were with larger files where most of what was happening was actually transfer of data rather than file management overhead. This is not particularly staggeringly fast performance. It's adequate, and if you bear in mind that once the transfer completes you're actually finished with the transfer and don't have to sneakernet a thumb drive or external hard drive around and start the operation over again, it's acceptable. However, I regularly get 60 to 85 MB per second from hard drives with lots of moving parts on the same 2 machines, and since these were solid-state transfers I have to admit my expectations were a bit higher. However, had this been the only issue, I would have been satisfied with the product. Unfortunately I have experience with a few similar devices from back in the heyday of USB 2.0. Conceptually they were all the same, USB connections at either end of a cable with a bit of electronics in the middle and used for transferring files from one machine to another. These previous incarnations by other manufacturers were much simpler and did not require you to pollute the hard drives of both machines involved in the transfer. So if you wanted to transfer a few files to a friend's machine, you could do so and leave nothing behind apart from the files you'd actually transferred. THIS incarnation of the concept requires that you spray software manure (including drivers no less) all over everywhere which stays behind when you leave and has to be cleaned up manually assuming you don't want to leave it installed. The only "convenience" is that the software install package is physically located within the electronics in the cable rather than a separate CD or DVD. The previous incarnations I was accustomed to simply plugged in to both machines and usually auto-started the transfer software on both machines, or at the very worst required that you manually start the software from the simulated hard drive in the cable. In other words, you usually just plugged the cable in and you were off to the races, no install required. A very slick and satisfying experience. Genuinely could not be easier. So again, I feel obliged to give this product 3 stars because it does do what it says it will do. But relative to what I'm used to, it's a crappy execution and the speed at which it operates doesn't make up for it. Meh at best and bleck at worst.

I use it to transfer files from/to my Mac and Windows PC's. It's fast, and a cheap alternative to getting a thunderbolt card for my Windows PC. However, it does not map as a drive, only copies.

I bought this for the express purpose of transferring files between my old Windows 7 PC to my new Windows 10 PC using Total Commander's 'USB connection to other PC' function (invoked with: Net -> PORT Connection To Other PC...). I made the old PC the server and the new PC the client. Once the connection is established in Total Commander, I could see the old PC's C:\ drive in one pane and the new PC's C:\ drive in the other pane. Everything just worked.

Must have for doing data migration and it arrives faster than you think. I canceled because it said it was going to arrive much later than I needed but the seller said it should be here sooner. Good product.

Occasionally lost connection between the 2 computers, but otherwise no issue.
