Connector not as pictured - Functions fine otherwise
The handpiece I received had a full thread connector, with a very long barrel vs. the shorter collet style. This matches more closely the original Metcal STSS series with threaded connector, except this is a thicker, hex barrel style and much too long.It works, and seems every bit as form and function equal. It is nice to find a replacement for my MX500-11 workstation and older units. My ancient Metcal tips work fine, and I will be sure to try their replacements soon! Now for the tweezers - next purchase!Dinged 1 star because of inaccurate connector photo.

Could be perfect but the connector needs improvement.
The picture needs updating as it is now a nut for the coaxial end, instead of a collet. Ideally, you want the cable to remain secure to the unit without the cable rotating. Rotating will wear out the center pin plating and connector, which will give you an intermittent connection. (as I have in one of my units) This is an overview of the connectors as the rest of the hand piece has no issues.I have 3 models of wands, the first shp-1, the current shp-1, and a mx-h1-av.-The original Metcal hand pieces have a collet with what looks like threads but is just ribbing. This in long term will wear down the peaks of the threads but seems to work better worn out. These work with all units made.-The first shp-1 works off of the same principal as the original but has an actual thread. It is extremely hard to tighten down but will provide the best clamping if pliers are used. 7.1 mm connector depth, which does not matter in this design.-The new shp-1 has a nut to tighten it down. This works the best if the length of the threads are not too long, which they are. This has a depth of 6.6mm which is a problem as I found out.I also have 3 models of Metcals, the first and second gen and the mx-500.- The first gen metcal (stts-001) will work perfect with this new hand piece.- The second gen (stts-002) has a thread length of 6.5mm. Close, but not enough to secure the cable.-As for the mx-500, I ended up replacing the connectors before I received this hand piece, not expecting a change in design. The coaxial connector on this is pcb mount through a thick cast alloy. I had to remove the washer to improve the length to 6.1mm. Which is way too short for this. The part I used was a Cinch VF320 which threads measure 15mm. I should've used a TE connectivity 5887046-1 which datasheet shows 16mm. That would give the extra mm in order to secure this new wand. The original is 15mm, which is not long enough.I would like to see a slightly shorter nut so that this wand will work the stts-002. For now, I may just swap wands around until I get the best fit.

Works just like the Metcal
Well-made, good materials, and functionally equal to the Metcal (I am using this with a Metcal base). A great value also.

Garbage and Dangerous
The handle broke almost immmediately. I had to tape the handle together to use it as I needed to get work done. Don't put yourself in this situation. Spend a bit more and buy a new Metcal solder handle or buy a used one.

Really cheap feeling plastic
This thing feels really cheap and low quality. Pay a bit more and get the RM3E instead. Also note that this has a fully screwed in coaxial of plug whereas the Metcal versions use a collet which don’t require it to be entirely screwed in. I like thermaltronics’ other products but they really dropped the ball with this

Metcal compatible
I bought this to marry to a Metcal solderstation. It fit perfectly and has worked fawlessly.
