Chainsaw Man, Vol. 1 (Volume 1)

A fantastic Manga
The art is beautiful, the character designs and gore are incredibly detailed, the story so far is a master class in pacing and suspense, in subverting expectations in the best way possible, the panel lay outs are like shots in a movie, and sometimes even your imput as a reader actively turning the page is used with you, coralating to a sword slash or chainsaw chewing though things. The artist has done a fantastic job integrating the real life aspects of reading into the manga itself which I haven't anywhere else before. Would 100% recommend to anybody interested in a gory action anti-hero manga with some seriously dark twists and turns. This is one to own physically.

Totally bonkers, but delightful!
When Denji is betrayed by someone he trusts, he becomes permeated with the devil’s powers and unleashes them in the form of Chainsaw Man. Part human, part devil, now he has to choose between joining the government agency responsible for hunting down and killing demons, or becoming the prey himself. The protagonist is a simple being, whose only dreams in life are clean clothes, a working toilet, and the possibility that he just might one day get to touch a boob. My teenage self can relate. However, things take a turn for the worse for Denji when he is dismembered by the Yakuza over debts owed by his father. Left for dead in a dumpster, he forms a contract with the Devil Dog Pochita, who becomes his heart. After this, he can transform into the devil-human Hybrid known as Chainsaw Man by pulling a cord on his chest. Given the subject matter, it would’ve been easy for writer Tatsuki Fujimoto to fill the pages with gory content, however the seven chapters on offer here are interlaced with humour and heart, courtesy of the likeable Denji. I have to say that I genuinely feel for him, will someone please just let him touch a boob! This isn’t a pg-13, mind. The action sequences when they come are not only graphically violent but highly creative too, and horror hounds will equally get their fix. This is a great introduction to the Chainsaw Man series, combining the everyday trials of a hormonal teenager with the bloodlust of a demon hunter, who has chainsaws protruding from his head and arms. It’s totally bonkers, but great fun to boot! I enjoyed the first instalment and will definitely be picking up book two.

A true joy to read
If you're at all interested in manga, in series like Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack On Titan etc, or just enjoy good storytelling in general, do yourself a favour and read this series. It's childish jokes and charm slowly turn into a dark and bleak story with some of the best art I've seen. This series is a very solid 9/10 for me, purely because I haven't read the last volume yet(it's not out in my country for a couple months)
