shiny and light but does hte job really well, stable, and easy to clean
I have gone into detail because I wanted to explain why even though there are some good bits, the bad bits ( all about the brush - so the stand and bowl are good but the brush is awful and possibly dangerous) so that if you are buying it just for the stand or bowl you do not miss out on a bargain fot the stand and bowl, but the brush, oh my the brush is a disaster!I have written my review with the good things first and then the bad, I have included photos to the best of my ability (only have a phone camera, and I am not good at taking photos)so if you wish you could scroll down to the bad and work towards the good but I thought it only fair to point out there are good bits first.why did I choose this to begin with:I was looking for a shaving set for my son and saw this advertised.I thought - at this price it is going to be bad, but.... I could use it myself for something completely different, and at this price why not try (as of Nov 2020 it was £7.42 and available for free PRIME delivery)The GOOD;Description - shiny or matt bowl??The description given by the seller has photos - the photos are very confusing, some are of a shiny bowl, and some are of a matt bowl - I can confirm this is the shiny bowl - not sure why they have photos of a matt metal bowl in there ( two by my count) but in case you too were unsure - it is shiny.[see photo]stainless steel...*I was not sure if this is stainless steel - simply because the bowl is super light - in fact I had to tap it on the side to be sure it was indeed metal - which it is.*I also thought the stand had the look of those "chrome" things you can get at shops like argos which flake and rust quickly and horribly.so - I did a quick magnet test - and the answer is - it is definitely made of a magnetic metal which suggests it is indeed stainless steel.Shape of bowl* I think perhaps the lightness of the bowl may come from it being hollow - I am not sure it is, but the bowl is thick and rounded ( again the misleading matt bowl pictures look like they have a flat top, this does not). This got me to thinking it might have some thermal properties (insulating) that I will try down the line and if any good will report back here.* The bowl sits really easily in my hand, it is really confortable, and the rounded top means no sharp edges anywhere. I would imagine that would be really good if you are using it for its intended use - to lather shaving foam and hold it whilst you apply the foam to face with the other hand holding the brush. The Stand:*The stand with the bowl in ,is surprisingly stable. what I am using it for is much heavier than the brush it is intended to hold and not a wobble.I tried the stand without the bowl in, and then it was still stable as long as you did not knock it sideways with force, but with the bowl it is really quite stable, even though it is light, possibly because the bowl touches the surface it is sitting on so provides extra stibility (the stand just stops the bowl from travelling side to side or forwards).quibble: The bowl is a tad tricky to get out of the stand one handed, with two hands it pops out easily. The BAD:The Brush* - it is again a lightweight item, I know shaving brushes, wet shaving is such a thing in my family - much preferred over electrical shaving, and the brush is quite light compared to the more upmarket brushes with mahogany leather etc handles. Now, if you have never used a shaving brush before this will mean nothing to you and I think it really makes no difference to the shave, I mention it solely for comparison purposed against brushes, that on their own will set you back more, but this one is bad for many other reasons other than this cosmetic difference in weight- please read on ...* handle - I think it is made of something like pine or bamboo, it is machine turned and has defects - not a real problem esthetically at a distance, but in the hand you feel them and also I worry - there seems to be a thin glaze on the wood, and combined with the workmanship defects I think it will lead to staining, roughing and eventually splintering - NOT what you want from something you use every day in your bare hands. A proper brush, even entry level one, should be smooth, if it is made of wood as many are it whould be polished well with a protective polish of beeswax or similar to ensure it can be properly and easily cleaned, and to protect the brush from the water and lather and daily use. This one will be difficult to keep clean, but again in my opinion you simply should not use this on your face - ever. You can buy a decent shaving brush, that will do you and your face no harm from about £5 - like a wilkinson finest bristle, or for looks and longevity try Bluebeard or Bennys of london ( theone without the metal ring) for only about £25, possibly less here, especially in their super sales, and it is so worth it, or just don't use this one on your face, use it for painting or something that goes nowhere near you or your food ( I would not recommend this for coffee - like cleaning your grinder , becasue fo the reasons below).[see photo]* The metall ring -well, it has arrived with the "gold" colour plastic film alrady patchy and rubbed off and ther is cheap metal underneath - from experience with these things I would take a guess and say it is high in irritants like nickel and cadmium etc - deinitetly NOT something to go anywhere near your skin, hand or face, and using a brush you cannot help but touch all of the handle in use, as you manouvre it circling and sweeping the lather.[see photo]The attachment of the Bristles -* clumpy, ugly, and possibly toxic glue lumps - bad, just bad - I would not put that near my face, let alone rub it in.[see photo ]The bristles -* now I am confused, as some of the other reviewers said they were soft, and again possibly they have never used a proper shaving brush before, perhaps I am being picky, or maybe this one is faulty - anyway I find hte bristles to not be as soft as I think they should, for reference it is softer than a brush you would use to paint your shed, and not as soft as a small artist paintbrush.* I dampened the end, and with gloved hands so that I did not touch any of the unpleasant bits described above, I gave it a few curls and sweeps on the back of my gloved hand - and bristles came out. If I had not used a brush before I might think of it as perhaps you have to shake a few out to start or something, but I have , and do use good brushes and this is not a good brush, and no - bristles should not be falling out, especially on the first few tries, and I was not even coming up against stubble.[see photo]So, overall I have given it a really low 1 star because I just don't think the brush is safe to use- if I were just reviewing the brush I would like to give it * 0 * stars- however the 1 star comes form the surprisingly good bowl and stand, and might have thought about a 2 or 3 star for those components but again took it back down to 1 star as I do not want to be responsible for encouraging people to buy this if they are intending to use the brush o ntheir face, which understandibly they probably would.

Old school shaving at its best
Having always used modern shaving techniques, I was curious to see if traditional methods were better. After using this wonderful old school shaving set, I am a believer! The shaving brush is a joy to use with soft bristles that develop a lovely lather from shaving cream/gel and evenly applies it with significantly less wastage. No bristles have been lost so far despite regular use. The wooden brush handle too is well designed and makes the brush effortless in use, whilst the bowl is lightweight and easy to wash. The stand has a brilliantly simplistic design, holds the brush and bowl nicely and looks great in the bathroom. Thanks to its compact design I'll be taking this with me on my next holiday.Once you have tried old school shaving you will never go back.

I love this
I have been trying to reduce the amount of packaging that we use in our home and decided to start using the old fashioned shaving methods as they are more environmentally friendly and more cost efficient too. This brush and stand set is really nice to have in the bathroom. There's more of a ritual to shaving this way and I love it. No more expensive shaving gels for me. I use it with ARKO shaving soap and am delighted with the results. Try it. You won't be disappointed.

Excellent value
I really enjoy my shaving ritual now. This set is perfect for my needs.Bowl is fine, and the brush is ok although maybe a bit small; I'll invest in a better one in due course. The stand is good but perhaps a little smaller than it looks in the photos. I'd say that it was a good purchase for what I wanted
