This Was Where It All Started-Really!
In early 1972 it looked like Kenny Loggins was about to start off on a solo venture but enter former engineer and sometime musician with Buffalo Springfield and one of the original founding members of Poco, Jim Messina, who helped Loggins make great music and become one of the greatest music duo acts of the seventies combining sounds of folk-rock and country along with some flavoring of wind and reed instruments which nearly comes close to the sounds of Chicago. This maiden voyage of that duo kicks off with a bang on "Nobody But You" which follows up with the classic "Danny's Song" sweetened by the sound of the violin from time to time with a backdrop of acoustic guitar and piano. This is the version I mainly prefer over the Anne Murray cover that charted even higher in Top Five. I always loved the way "Vahevala" started off with the sounds of the accordion and recorder reminiscent of a sea chantey background before kicking it into high gear. Not only that, the intro almost sounded like the same pitch of the driver's side of my dad's Toyota back then because, at that time, he had an eight-track tape deck in his car and one of the tapes combined this album and L & M's second album later that year and this song's intro matched the pitch to the driver's side door when opened. A sheer coincidence that was. The epic piece on here is "TRILOGY: Lovin' Me/To Make A Woman Feel Wanted/Peace Of Mind" where it flows, then picks up speed, then slows back down again. "Back To Georgia" goes for the gusto with gritty guitar and soaring saxophones. "House At Pooh Corner" is a salute to A.A. Milne's classic tales of Winnie The Pooh and all-time favorite amongst Kenny Loggins fans. "Listen To A Country Song" nails it as far as country-rock goes with picking guitars and fancy fiddle playing. "Same Old Wine" is the second best epic piece on this effort with harmonica work by Kenny Loggins midway through not to mention fantastic lead guitar by Jim Messina. Finally, "Rock 'n' Roll Mood" closes off the album with Loggins' vocalizing to the point against the piano work of keyboardist Michael Omartian[who later became a producer especially in the Christian music market] and the rest of the band joins midway through before going back to basics towards to the song's conclusion. One thing worth mentioning on this album is the round of musicians used to back the team of Loggins & Messina. Great arrangements instrumentally speaking to match the duo's vocal work. An excellent beginning this album is. Highly recommended.

This could be the start of smething big!
This is such a great record. It was groundbreaking as a different form of country rock, which was still under definition at the time-you had the California sound of the Eagles, the Southern style of the Allman Bros, Lynerd Skynerd, Wet Willie, Charlie Daniels-Jim Messina had just left Poco, with their own style of country rock and was asked to work with new artist Kenny Loggins. Well it didn't take long for the 2 to start inspiring eachother, and what was supposed to be Kenny Loggins first solo effort turned out to be the beginning of a brief but intense friendship. The set kicks off with Messina's Nobody but you, a foretaste of what was to come. Danny's song follows with a nice mellow sound by Loggins that it was all over the soft adult contemporary charts in the 70's. Anne Murray covered it and took it up the charts. Then the 2 combine for what would be a calypso rave up, Vahevala which must have been a joy to record because it is just fun to listen to. They would repeat the idea on their 3rd album Full Sail. The trilogy still holds up after all these years, with a rocking' Back to Georgia that originally opened side two of the album in the vinyl format of the day. Another terrific song that speaks to our childhood is House at Pooh Corner. How many baby boomers kids were put to bed with that song playing in the background. Loggins would create a whole album and a sequel to it later in his career. What kind of music are we listening to? Well Listen to a Country Song gives you a partial answer as we encounter the family band. The forlorn Same Old Wine, and finally, a Rock and Roll Mood wraps up the first set, leaving us hungry for more, which would come along shortly. If you're looking for a simple feel good listen, this is it!

Not as good as I remember but still a good album.
It's not as good as I remember all those many years ago, but it's definitely worth the price and a good album nevertheless.

Loved these Guys!
Really fine musicians. Better than others of their era, hands down. Plus, Larry Sims (High harmonies, Bassist) was my best friend during his last 6 years. Back in 1976 Tom Reynolds of Hamilton, Joe Frank, and Reynolds, told me Jimmy Messina had a great style on Guitar and turned me on to them. He was right on, too! Tom is mentioned on the back cover because he provided Steel Pans for them to play. He also, made my Double Tenors. In 2008 I met Larry. What a small world! I own all albums recorded by them and am the proud owner of their 'Best Of Friends' Gold Album presented to Larry and given to me after his death.
