Stosstrupp 1917

Many reviews call this propaganda, but the film comes off as being apolitical and just shows the brutal conditions of what the average German Stosstrup experienced on the front lines and in combat. The combat was realistic with scenes with hand to hand combat , along with showing the mental toll the constant bombardment took on the average soldier. Bombardments were realistic as many scenes of collapsing trench dugouts showed men being buried alive or killed by the collapsing fortifications. The film in short just portrayed a realistic view of what is was like living and fighting in the trenches of WWI from the German perspective. There was no real pro war feel to the film itself.

Excellent film on what it was like in 1917 in the trenches and how awful it was to storm trenches as well as forts. One must view this film in its historic context as it was made by the Nazis for propaganda purposes albeit it was fairly accurate in its presentations.

German propaganda straight from Goebbels' ministry. Hitler's friend and minister of propaganda fancied himself a movie mogul. He produced a lot of offensive crap, but this one, showing the conditions on the Western Front in WW I is extremely well done. The tense, often claustrophobic conditions of trench warfare were well depicted, as well as the futility of bloody, wasteful frontal assaults made for little or no game. Comparable in many aspects to Milestone's "All Quiet on the Western Front," but lacks much of the personal stories, background and character interaction that made "All Quiet..." The classic it is.Well, worth the watching for its historical value, if nothing else. Could have been a classic but for its origins.

To understand STOSSTRUPP 1917, it is first necessary to mention WESTFRONT 1918, the movie that this one was largely made to refute.In 1930, during the closing days of the Weimar Republic, G.W. Pabst directed "Westfront," a blistering and bitter antiwar film set in the last year of the Great War. It followed four doomed German infantrymen during a week of their lives -- the last week, as it turned out, for most of them, and was unsparing it its depiction of the brutal fighting up front and the chaos, hunger and defeatism that was rampant back home. Four years later, when the Nazis were in power in Germany, the ardent Nazi Hans Zöberlein directed this "answer" to Pabst antiwar screed. Set one year earlier, it was meant to present the Great War in a context more fitting with Zöberlein's personal experiences in it (he was a highly decorated veteran of Verdun, and wrote a book about his experiences called "Faith in Germany," whose forward was penned by none other than Adolf Hitler), and with the Nazis views on warfare generally. In many ways, the movies are actually very similar: both feature a "fractured narrative" (meaning many characters with no clear "star") and both present the war as a series of vignettes rather than a "story" (there is no actual plot to either film). Both are equally unsparing in their depiction of combat and shot with a high degree of technical ability. The big difference is simply the level of enthusiasm the soldiers have for fighting. In one sequence, for example, the Germans are attacked by many British tanks. At first bullied and terrorized, they quickly develop methods of combating the tanks and hunting them become a sort of "sport" conducted with flaming barrels of explosive. In another sequence, a dying German soldier asks his friend pathetically if "this war is just a swindle, like everyone says?" His comrade gives him a touching speech assuring him that the cause is noble and the war honorable and just."Stoss" in German means "shock" and therefore the title translates to SHOCK TROOP 1917. German shock troops were highly able trench fighters picked for their daring and skill in close-quarters battle, and used to capture enemy trenches via rapid, bold rushes. They regarded themselves as a ruthless elite, contemptuous of death, and many of them joined the so-called Free Corps after the war, to help fight communist rebels; from there, many more (like Zöberlein himself) joined the Nazi Party. It's pretty clear that Zöberlein was attempting to show the seed of Nazi power in the toughness and ferocity of the shock troops, and in that and other senses this movie is a work of propaganda. While it is not precisely pro-war -- it really does show some hideous sides of battle, i.e. gas attacks, drumfires of shells, men dying in pain, etc. -- it is most definitely not antiwar and was part of a systematic attempt by the Nazis to recast WW1 in a way more in congruity with their ideology, and in Zöberlein's case, with his own personal memories of battle.As entertainment, I'd give this movie a C+/B-. The lack of a plot, and of any character development, and the bombastic subtext of the message make it somewhat of a disappointment. It is better enjoyed in small snatches for its combat sequences than as a movie in its totality. But its valuable as documentary evidence of how the Nazis saw the past war, and how they imagined the war to come.

This is a classic propaganda movie, and I enjoyed seeing it. I studied WWII propaganda in college, many years ago, and have been on the lookout for wartime movies from both sides with an eye towards keeping that interest alive. Most of these old wartime Nazi movies I have never seen. I've enjoyed the recent release of many of them, like "Stuka", and look forward to the possible release of some Japanese movies, too.

Always like the old classics especially from a different perspective

Astounding movie!! This has aged really well, and you feel like you're stuck in the trenches with them. Great to see a film with those early tanks in it too. Definately on a par with "All Quiet On The Western Front" and other greats.

I personally liked this movie. However it became somewhat repetitious, regarding the battle scenes and the characters were not well developed, however for a movie of the times, it is well worth a look.

Absolutely realistic acting, costume/set/scene design (right down to using real live ammunition for all the weapons effects) embodies an acutely honest look at war, and the reasons for it from the point of view of a people struggling to survive in a very specific political/economic context, which existed not so very long ago. Perhaps some might say it glorifies war; perhaps it only explains the heroism of individual self-sacrifice for a people, its way of life and its very existence.

台詞はドイツ語で、字幕は英語なのでストーリーを完全に理解しているわけではありませんが、思ったよりナチスのプロパガンダ臭は感じられず、ちょっとばかりドイツ側贔屓の「西部戦線異状なし」というテイスト。最後の「ドイツ軍兵士は国民の自由を守るために戦った」といった余計な字幕を除けばですが。終わらぬ砲撃に精神的に追い詰められていく兵士らの姿や、泥と汚水、がれきにまみれた塹壕の様子もリアル。

Der Film hat es geschafft, in einer Zeit des starken Nationalempfindens den Feind, engländer und Franzosen als Mensch darzustellen. Am Ende des Films gibt es sogar eine Friedensbotschaft. Den Film sollte man mit abgelegter Nazischeuklappe begutachten und es mit den Normen der damaligen Zeit betrachten. Naziglorifizierung oder Nazijargon kann ich dem Film nicht entnehmen.Jede Nation hat ihre Soldatenfilme, nur wir Deutschen machen uns noch immer Probleme damit.Die Bonus-CD beweist mit den beiden Originalfilmen des 1. WK die Authenzität.Zu einem Detail: in einer Szene wird ein Franzose, der sich ebreits ergeben hat, von einer Kugel getroffen. Hier hat etwa nicht der böse Deutsche mit Absicht geschossen, sondern lediglich eine verirrte Kugel hat den offen auf dem Schlachtfeld Gehenden erwischt.

Wer den alten amerikanischen Film "Im Westen nichts Neues" aus den 30er Jahren gesehen hat und diesen Film dann sieht, ist schlicht und einfach enttäuscht. Warum? Die Handlung spielt an der Ostfront, wobei Handlung eigentlich falsch ist. Es handelt sich vielmehr um eine Viezahl von von einzelnen Szenen der Kriegsschauplätze. Eine zusammengehörige Handlung konnte ich nicht feststellen. Kampfszenen, die teilweise sehr dilettantisch gemacht sind (wird auch im Vorspann vorgewarnt) unter dem Motto "tue mir bloß nicht weh", konnten mir nur ein Kopfschütteln entlocken. Auch vermisse ich die Gesamtaussage des Kriegsfilms. Die Dialoge sind schlicht und einfach primitiv und geben keine Aussage uber die Schrecklichkeit des Krieges.Okay, man hat sich Mühe bei der Restauration des Filmmaterials gegeben, aber beim Ton hat man wohl etwas zu viel des Guten getan. Er ist zwar fast rauschfrei, aber dabei wurde derart stark komprimiert, dass man oft die Dialoge nicht mehr versteht. Hinzu kommt noch, dass fast nur bayrisch geredet wird. Ich hatte wirklich Mühe, einiges zu verstehen!Die Bonus-DVD ist auch eher ein Witz. Zwei Interviews mit damaligen Zeitgenossen, wobei der erste (ehemaliger Kanonier)alte Mann nicht viel von damals erzählt. Jeder zweite Satz ist "Damals war alles anders, nicht so wie heute" und "eigentlich waren wir zufrieden". Und das der Krieg schrecklich war, war von seiner Seite aus nicht rauszuhören. Der Zweite schießt den Vogel ab: Der angebliche Leutnant (laut Vorspann 1899 (!!)geboren) war also bei Ausbruch des Krieges 1914 gerade 15 Jahre alt - also 1918 19 Jahre - erzählt auch nicht besonders viel. Mit 19 Jahren schon Leutnant? Kann sein, aber niemals mit 15.Zu den beiden Interviews kommt noch etwas authentisches Filmmaterial hinzu, dass nur mit Musik und Geräuschen untermalt und nicht besonders lang ist. Das hätte man sich schenken können.Ich kann Stoßtrupp 1917 nicht empfehlen. Zwei Sterne hat er nur bekommen, weil er recht preisgünstig ist und man sich beim Bildmaterial Mühe gegeben hat, sie in ordentliche Qualität umzusetzen. Die Aussage des Spielfilms kann man vergessen - da ist keine.Jörg Wernicke

Stosstrupp 1917 ist ein Film, der seiner Zeit weit voraus war und die Action-Filme der 80er Jahre vorwegnahm: viel Geballer, wenig Handlung und dürftige Dialoge. Die Schlachtszenen selber sind für die damaligen deutschen Verhältnisse allerdings recht gut gemacht und können überzeugen. Aber allerspätestens nach einer Stunde hat man genug davon und sehnt sich nach ein wenig Handlung.Die Bild- und Tonqualität kann natürlich nicht berauschend sein, ob der Geschichte dieses Films. Aber an etlichen Stellen ist es schlichtweg unmöglich, etwas zu verstehen. Erschwerend kommt hinzu, dass die meisten Dialoge auf Bayrisch geführt werden. Da wären Untertitel auf Hochdeutsch durchaus hilfreich.Aus zeitgeschichtlicher Sicht (frühe 30er Jahre) ist der Film allerdings recht interessant, da man anhand vieler Details innerhalb der "Handlung" sehr deutlich den damaligen Zeitgeist erkennt. Wer sich also mehr für das frühe 3. Reich als für den 1. Weltkrieg interessiert, der sollte sich "Stosstrupp 1917" ruhig mal zu Gemüte führen.
