Kokeshi, from Tohoku with Love

I love this book. I discovered this traditional craft and wanted to learn more before I visited Japan. The interviews and photos are great!If you are going to Tokyo area, there is a store called Kokeshka an hour south in Kamakura. They have a good selection of Kokeshi and also other kokeshi publications (in Japanese but still helpful for locating specific craftsmen).

Great introduction to Kokeshi, but far from comprehensive. Just basic info on modern kokeshi craftsmen, nothing about marks or the vintage collectible ones

This was even better than expected. Very good photos and amazing artists.

This could have been a better book if she told you more about the different types of Kokeshi as well as the makers.

A absolutely love kokeshis and have many that I got when I was in Japan. This book is the perfect addition to my collection. I hope go back someday and visit Tohoku.

Loved this book - we have over a dozen of the more modern dolls as we adore their sense of style - this book is really all about the original dolls and the craftsmen who made the - its a stunning insight into that world and has inspired me to buy a traditional doll - I may even buy more - love this book - a must for any Kokeshi fan

Whilst this a beautiful book about the Japanese art of Kokeshi dolls there is a high concentration of interviews with the artisans of this craft. There is information regarding the areas and identifying patterns but this could have been enlarged with more identified examples and photos. Notwithstanding that, the book is well worth reading and gives an In depth insight into the art. Certainly worth the purchase.

I was so delighted with this book that I felt it definitely deserved 5 stars. I have recently become interested in these simple wooden Japanese dolls. There are not many books on the subject and I was taking a chance but it turned out to be a very good buy with lovely illustrations and it has proved to be truly inspirational!

Un libro immancabile anche se in lingua inglese per coloro che amano questa tradizione fantastica delle kokeshi e per chi ancora non le conosce. C?è un poco di storia, le interviste ai migliori artigiani e qualche altra informazione che vi farà amare ancora di più queste bambole in legno coloratissime ed amate anche dai più piccini.
