glad i was wrong
I thought about purchasing Space Marine (SM) for a month or so. I've played several fps (e.g. Red Faction, Halo, Gears of War, Call of Duty) and pegged SM as a product at the mid/lower end of the spectrum. Fortunately I was wrong. First I'll discuss my thoughts on the campaign, then I'll address multiplayer. Normally, I don't care for the campaign aspect of fps, but I could picture myself replaying it after beating it. Some fps games are quite tedious at the hardest levels in terms of remebering to be at a certain location at a certain time with a certain weapon in order to beat the few enemies that prevent you from reaching a checkpoint. SM does a good job at not putting players through this. Instead, success is more a factor of managing larger and larger hordes of enemies rushing you. I prefer this because there's a greater adrenaline rush...the more traditional design feels like I'm playing chess which I find boring. Multiplayer is always the determining factor on whether I deem a game a good purchase. SM has two game types: annihilation (like 'team deathmatch' in COD) and seize ground (like 'domination' in COD). At first, I thought this was a liability. Then I realized that +90% of online players play these game types anyway. Not only that, but other game types (e.g. Headquarters, Demolition in COD) tend to require higher tactical skill levels, which most players don't exercise, and that results in blowouts more often than not. Getting spawn trapped is mitigated by giving each team a protected respawn area; players have an option to spawn next to other players or at controlled points on map (seize ground only). Weapons have sufficiently large magazines such that in a 1v1 engagement, reloads really aren't necessary before one player is killed. Grenades can't be "cooked", which ends up being a good thing if you don't like to play in a map where you spend most of your time getting killed by grenades...players are typically forced to finish an opponent in a more manly way (shots, or melee). The melee system is good because it isn't "one hit one kill"...also, with the lunge and dodge capability of players, quite a bit of technique is involved in a straight-up melee engagement...also, several melee weapons with various performance parameters are available. Tracking while scoping is also smooth. The perk system is kinda-sorta like COD. However, certain perks are only available for certain classes (3 class-types available, which can be used to create 9 customized characters). I think this is a clever way to ensure that each class type is meant for specific styles of play...otherwise, players could get away with using a "master class" that basically works all then time. Game tempo is great because you have the option of instantly respawning...also, players have unlimited respawns...unlike Gears of War (what a snooze-fest). Maneuver is a big part of the game (thank you!). I think this is the first fps that really got this right. They do this in two ways: 1) players have unlimited sprint capability, 2) jet-packs enable players to cover huge distances. This is fantastic because now every map (big or small) plays with the action of a smaller map. Furthermore, the maps allow many ways to approach an enemy...so campers typically don't last very long as long as players are willing to execute flanking movements. I could go on, but this is already too much. Overall, great game.

Fantastic Gameplay in a Strange World - Non W40K fan
I got this game after being reccommended by my friend who has been W40K fan for long time and played every single game. Gameplay: Absolutely perfect amazing blend of Hack N Slash with Third Shooter Action. This is unique and very enjoyable. Every moment I encounter enemies, it was satisfying to kill and destroy. Story: It isn't anything original but does features interesting characters with famous voice actors. The setting is indeed strange for me and conceptualize in a Fantasy/Sci Fi genre, weird combination. As a non W40K fan, I was looking for more backstory or some kind of database in game to explore W40K universe. Certain parts of singleplayer feels boring, levels are too big, it requires a lot of running from point A to B, loses focus with flow of the story, but as long there hordes of enemies to slaughter, have fun revving the chainsword and get spectacular kills. Graphics & Sound: Very high end graphics and cutscenes are extremely well rendered. The character models and details are very high end render similarly like Unreal Engine like quality. The textures are smooth and no pop ups. In the end, it looks very polished, well done work by Relic Entertainment for making this game look GREAT. I am huge fan of pushing a system to its limits by taking advantage of everyting available to make a game look great. The soundtrack of game is indeed very epic for story and sound effects for weapons are hard and has kick when fired or used. Multiplayer: This game mode pretty much similar very other MP of other games except with gameplay of singleplayer is fully integrated. The game runs on Dedicated Servers so there is no issue of lag. The multiplayer may be little difficult if you are new Third Person action but for any Gears of War Fan or Uncharted, this game will be a breeze. And upcoming Coop mode will be added as free DLC where it will feature game mode like Horde, Zombies or Firefight. Happy Gaming!

Space Marine... I'm mean - c'mon!
I love the 40k universe. It's absolutely fascinating to me. Having played a little 40k table-top in my youth and (more recently) a few months worth of Dark Heresy and Deathwatch, this game was an excellent treat. Running around as a space marine, blasting orks, daemons, and heretics into red mist with huge, powerful weapons... what more could you ask for? Ok... you certainly could ask for more. Space Marine isn't the most polished or innovative game, but the enviroments are nice and gloomy, and the game is full of interesting looking enemies and decent voice acting. If I was not such a 40k fan I would definately give the game a 4 star - solid game play, high replay value (for when you just gotta smash things into little bits), and an intersing story line. Oh... the game ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and it doesn't look as if the sequel will ever come to fruition, but you can imagine how things might go (or make your own Deathwatch mission if you like rpgs). Great little game, no complaints worth mentioning.

This is a great game for less than $30. The campaign is on the shorter side but the Warhammer lore is fantastic as is the combat and gameplay. I didn't venture online but most people have no complaints with that aspect of the game. If you can score a copy for under $30 you will enjoy it.

This game is actually not bad! There heads are a little out of proportions, but the way you get to curb stomp the orks head is amazing! (Not totally sure if there orks or not :p There is also many other ways you can kill them. Very interesting! This game is pretty awesome but when I look back, I could've waited till it was down to about 40-50. Not 69. Other than that, get it!
