A novice's experience: very gentle for dogs and people!
I have a female 14 year old Golden/Labrador mix. She had surgery years ago to repair a torn cruciate ligament, and along with pain in that leg plus severe osteoarthritis throughout her body, she experiences sensitivity all over her body, including her paws. Added to that difficulty is my inexperience at trimming dog claws and my temerity to do so. I put off buying dog nail clippers for weeks and procrastinated trimming her for days, but the sight of her overgrown nails was too much to bear. I thought it posed a fall hazard, so I picked a time when she was relaxed and started trimming.I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to trim my sweet dog's very hardened nails with these extra-sharp clippers. I read the manufacturer's very helpful instructions (twice) about being careful not to clip too closely to the nail quick. I had explained briefly to my dog what I was about to do, and I petted her. I took a deep breath and began by trimming just a tiny portion at a time. She didn't flinch as she normally did when I touched her paws. She let me trim four nails before she withdrew her paw. I gave her a treat, and she let me trim three more. Then she got up and walked away to the other end of our home. I let her have some space for a few minutes, and then quickly trimmed the rest, praising her with more treats. Now, she doesn't need to walk gingerly, and her claws don't make clickety-clacking sounds on our hardwood floors anymore. Best of all, two very long nails (which I suspect were causing her discomfort and creating a dysfunctional gait) are gone, and she can walk with more confidence -- a big bonus for a geriatric, arthritic dog.In response to the Amazon reviewer who gave a low rating due to her/his experience with these clippers "shattering" a dog's nails, I would suggest that this may have been a user error. I noticed that these clippers make the cleanest cut when they are placed at a perpendicular angle to the dog's claw. That is to say, one shouldn't tilt them up or down to cut at an angle (like we do for flower stems), but rather cut straight across the nail. When used correctly, these clippers provide a clean trim. The reviewer may also have had this experience using clippers which were the wrong size, as well. It is important to select the right size, and if you have any questions about selecting the right size, please contact Paul or Sarah of Simply Pets Online. They provide excellent and individualized customer service if you have questions or concerns about trimming your dog's nails.I highly recommend these dog nail clippers.

Good clippers
I have a pup that makes life hell to trim her nails. I bought one of those grinder ones and they work great for pups that let you trim their nails and not afraid of the noise. This clipper is sharp and has the guard so you don't clip too short. No noise. I am able to quickly cut her nails. Not all at once, but one at a time when she is not aware. You have to be fast and the guard helps you to swoop in and quickly do a clip. The guard has to be pushed in a bit to not trim off too much. But they work. Be fast at it.

I did it!
First off, this is not a paid review or anything of the sort. I actually never bother to write these, but sure do appreciate all you other folks that do!These clippers are really the best. I have a 14year old medium sized girl and her nails are black. I've never had to bother with clippers because we're active and they tend to keep themselves pretty short. This year her activity level plummeted, her age finally caught up to her. Well our walks went from twice a day to maybe twice a week. her nails have gotten to the point where they click the hardwood and most recently I even think she's stepping on her front feet a little tenderly because of them.In the last few months I've purchased two other pairs of clippers and being the amateur that I am, couldn't have been more freaked out. One pair wasn't nearly tough enough and the second pair got caught on itself and wouldn't release or cut the nail. I had to break them to get it to release. Of course shes in complete panic mode having her nails done so the poor performance of the clippers sure didn't help matters much. From reviews and a little youtube action I decided on these. One, for the quick guard seeing as her nails are much too long now; and the hopeful trust that what I was reading and seeing was in fact truthful assessments of the clippers. IT WAS! It's all true and these are perfect. With some confidence and fast assertive cuts I trimmed her nails easily and fast with out fighting her. A little soft talk and making sure I felt in control really helped. They snipped her nails EASILY and after the first cut I was moving through with ease and she was good with it.I took the tip off, used the quick guard and will wait another 2 weeks to do a little more. I'm still unsure of how far the quick can travel but I read somewhere that the longer the nail the longer the quick; as the nail recedes so does the quick. I know that bleeding isn't a tragic thing and a little cornstarch stops it right away; but none-the-less I'd like to do it the right way for her.All in all, just get these first and don't waste your money elsewhere.

Wonderful sharp trimmers great for pruning roses
I know these are for dog toenails but I use them for snipping my roses. These are very sharp and sturdy trimmers. I deadhead my roses weekly in order to continue getting blooms. These nail trimmers work so much better that actual pruners for deadheading. They snip the rose cane clean and never crush, split or tear it. I had a previous pair like this that lasted over 10 years, but finally wore out. I hope this new pair serves me as long.

Awesome
These are amazing! My dog hates having her nails clipped and these are so much easier to use than my old ones. I did all of her nails so fast, she didn't have time to freak out! They work well, I feel like I can see her quick better so they feel more safe to use. And they have a great grip on them.

This was a great trimmer, but only for just under 2 years
This was a great trimmer for our 30 pound dog. However, in the last few months the stainless steel blade that is noted as "robust and durable" started to rust. There has been orange powder around the blades and now the trimmer will not pop back open after a cut. Despite taking excellent care of the product and storing it safely between uses, this still occurred. I have contacted the seller, so we will see what the response is.
