Good entry level keyboard let down by its built in instruments and rhythms
I was looking for a replacement keyboard for my over 20 year old Evolution Music Creator 49. The Evolution keyboard used midi to connect to a computer and came with a great software package. However it came with a lead that powered it through the computer's games port (remember those?). When used with an external power supply it has always been a bit flaky with odd things going on from time to time. Also the most recent version of Windows that I can get the software to run on is Windows XP. So I thought it was time to get something a bit more up to date. After reading the reviews and considering prices I decided on the Axus AXP2L as on paper it had all the features I was looking for. However when I started using it it became apparent that the on board instruments are on the whole no where near as good as the general midi ones I had been using with the Evolution keyboard. Many have an unpleasant harshness to them and only have a vague resemblance to the instrument they are supposed to be. The organs are particularly disappointing, which surprises me considering that this is a keyboard. Also the rhythms seem mainly aimed at dance music being somewhat upbeat and cluttered. However there are a few instruments and rhythm combinations that I find work well with the tunes I am playing. You may wonder why I gave 4 stars having read that. This keyboard comes with a built in midi connection and a line in jack. I have used these to connect to my Windows XP netbook and external Soundblaster sound card and the whole thing works beautifully. I can use the Evolution software along with the much better sounding instruments and rhythms that were included. Feeding the output back into the Axus keyboard's speakers shows what great speakers they are. The poor sound of some of the built in instruments is certainly not due to the speaker system. So I am happy with the keyboard as it enables me to continue using the Evolution software that has given me so much pleasure over the years without any hitches. On top of this I can benefit from the few built-in instrument and rhythm combinations that I think work better than the Evolution ones.

Arrived unusable and unable to even power on
Daughter opened for Christmas and it didn't work straight out the box. Avoid at all costs. Even the stand I bought separately was buckled and bent beyond use.

Live the light up keys
Love the keyboard and the light up keys. Unfortunetly I'm not familiar with almost all the demo songs other than about 3. I only wish there was a way to download more demo songs to be used with the light up keys.

Doesn't have features I wanted.
I was somewhat disappointed in this product. I was looking for something where I could effortlessly learn how to play popular songs with the keys lighting up to remind me of the next note to play but (A) "songs" are hard coded into the device and there is no facility for adding extra songs (I did suspect this was the case before it came) , and (B) the songs there are are not popular classics like say "Hey Jude" but instead just inconsequential and meaningless tunes that are made up by the manufacturers, which I have no incentive to learn, and learning is difficult anyway since you can't guess what note comes next.Other than that fatal shortcoming, I bought a keyboard 25 years ago for my son and apart from the light up keys I swear that has more functionality. For example, on the new keyboard there is no facility for entering notes so that it will play back and you can hear what the tune is supposed to sound like. Memory seems limited too.I ordered the keyboard plus other bits and pieces for £180 but only got the keyboard so there was a mix up there, but that could have been easily remedied and is not really a complaint. I mention it as a warning to other purchasers. I sent it back after a day in any case. There doesn't appear to be a light-up-key style of keyboard that does what I want it to do on the market.

Very dissappointed but optimistic that this can be resolved please help
Very happy with the keyboard to start with, then after 2 weeks started having a problem with the on / off button keyboard screen doesn't come on only flashing, trying to return to Amazon for a replacement but in their returns section it doesn't give me that option, so at this moment I'm stuck with a keyboard that I don't want to turn on in case this fault develops and causes more internal damage to the keyboard
