Loved the story
Easy reading and descriptive of the times and there are comparisons to THE DIRTY 30's as told by my mother.

Enjoyed the book very much
This book is about the life of this family in Northern Kansas in the late 1800's. My ancestors were in that same area at the same time, so it has a special meaning to me. It really makes me wonder if the families knew each other.

If you've ever wondered what real life on the prairie was like, this is a must read.
I had first read the 1960s printing which I'd found in a small KS town antique store. My great grandparents were some of the pioneers who'd settled western Kansas and eastern Colorado, and reading this book gave me a newfound appreciation for the difficulties they must have faced. I was thrilled to find that this updated, unabridged printing contained annotations and notes that give additional historical context to John Ise's original book. If you've ever wondered what real life on the prairie was like, this is a must read. I only wish there were other historical narrative books that were this detailed and personal.

Sod and Stubble, by John Ise is a great read!
"Sod and Stubble" by John Ise is a great read. It was one of the best books I've read in a while, except for the Bible. It chronicles the life of Henry and Rosie Ise and their many children as they take on the life of pioneers in western Kansas in the late 1880s. It covers about 20 years. After Henry dies, Rosie moves to Lawrence, Kansas. John Ise interviewed his mother Rosie about how it used to be, taking extensive notes which became the basis for this book. He was a professor of economics at the University of Kansas, and highly regarded. The depiction of characters in their large family, the constant hardships, the simple joys, are informative and touching, and they stay with me as I live my life which is so much easier physically than theirs was. I highly recommend it.

Family history
The family has this book somewhere. ... This is an account of every-day life in the time period The family knew some of these people. Fun to be able to read about areas where we used to go vacation as kids.

Historical fiction about homesteaders in Kansas
I loved the book. It speaks of like on the frontier as a young couple homesteaded in Kansas in the 1800's. The book is about the author's parents and their lives on the harsh frontier.
