Sadlythis very cool-looking device would not calibrate and either appeared broken or not designed to function in the first place. At first I thought it was user error, but I asked my sciencey brother and sister-in-law to try to figure it out and it became clear it just wasn't working. I even tested it with liquor with a known percentage of alcohol and it was waaaaaaay off. I decided to level up and try something a bit more expensive instead of asking for a replacement with the idea you get whatyou pay for.

Works great! Easy to calibrate. Great little tool for reading the percentage of your OH . I love this thing! Just what I wanted.

Being able to check individual fruit content has never been easier. Wish I had this thing months ago.

When I first got this, I was excited because it was fairly cheap and easy to read. There was just one problem: it was off by a significant amount when I tried testing it against some known concentrations of alcohol. "Nothing to fear," I thought, the device has a calibration screw that supposedly lets you adjust the refractometer's reading. Unfortunately, the screw failed to change the device's reading meaning that I'm stuck with a useless device that's off by a large but unspecified amount. I would avoid this!

Simple and easy to use

Dead easy to calibrate and to use. I checked it on several samples of proofed alcohol and once calibrated on plain water, it did a good job for that. Doesn't give accurate readings on undistilled products though- other things in the mix, affect the refractive index. That's just the way it is- not a reflection of a flaw in the device.
