The "East" compass point has "O" marking, I suppose for German language "Osten". The Smithsonian photos online of the original do not show "O" for east, but the English "E". Not a true exact reproduction.

Makes a great gift. I gave it 3 stars because I felt it could have been made with a little more quality. The latch on the wooden box could be made more secure. With that being said it was a hit. I would recommend it, just a heads up on what to expect.

I bought this as a gift for my parents. It is a beautiful piece! My only concern is with the hinges, they seem like they might pose a problem in the future, but so far they've been fine. That's the only reason I don't give it 5 stars. I gave it to my parents and they loved it.

Had authentic look, but the compass is not functional -- does not point towards magnetic north. I purchased two of them as gifts and neither pointed north. If you are looking for a $40 stage prop only, then this is probably the compass for you.
