When Harry Met Sally meets The Longest Yard.
The most underrated football rom-com ever made (probably the only one ever made). Expect a fun romp, and you will not be disappointed. As football movies go, this is right up there with the original Longest Yard (with Burt Reynolds). Don't think about the set-up too hard. The pro players are going on strike, so this particular team hires temporary "replacements," including a replacement coach. Somehow, they are playing against other pro teams with players who are not on strike. Somehow, the strike also includes the cheerleaders (but not the head cheerleader). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's a movie. Just suspend your disbelief and go with it. Outstanding cast, including Gene Hackman as the replacement coach, and Jack Warden as the team owner – his final turn on screen. Keanu Reeves is likable and believable as a former OSU quarterback infamous for throwing away the Sugar Bowl game. He's surrounded by an outstanding comedic cast of other replacement players, including Jon Favreau and many more you will recognize. Hilarious cameos by Pat Summeral and John Madden. If the long-shot games don't have you rooting for Reeves' character, the romantic subplot with the head cheerleader will. If you like football movies, and you've never seen this one, you will wonder where this has been all your life. If you like rom-coms, this does that category a solid too. If you like films that make you laugh, cry, and leave you feeling better about the world and everyone in it – this is for you too. Great date movie. Pop some corn and enjoy.

The Replacements is decent, but...
Hey, any movie made is a major undertaking - lots of people putting their heart into the process - so it always gets me when I don’t like a film. I want to so much, just for their efforts. And in the end, The Replacements is one of those films I wanted to like more, but couldn’t. Hey, it’s decent, and with two headliners like Gene Hackman and Keanu Reeves, I expected to love it - at least they were great. But in the end, what I didn’t like (and frankly, it’s what a lot of other people will love about it) is the stop and starting internet between the (irony) heart of the movie and over the top joking. For my taste the movie makers couldn’t fully commit to the genuine heart that was present and kept cutting to over the top characters (that could have had more depth) and tiny-clad cheerleaders who had little to nothing to do with the actual story. Great for cheap laughs and appealing to their young male demographic, but they lost something even those young guys could have enjoyed. This middle age guy can appreciate what they were going for, but it was clumsy and took away from what was going on every time they were making it work, so it lost me and my wife. Apparently it’s based on a real situation back in the day (I think 80s - my wife looked it up) when players went on strike. Replacements are brought in and while most coaches went with guys who were closer to actual active players, this coach (played very well by Hackman) went another way, bringing in guys who... would never make it in reality. Hence the over the top characters. It might have been cool if they’d even had these guys, but not so over the top... again, it felt like they couldn’t decide if this was a RomCom, comedy, or dramade and in the end, the hodgepodge missed the mark for us. Anyway... Reeves too is good as the QB who didn’t make it beyond a rough bowl game (that came up a lot) and yet here he’s got the age and the confidence and maturity that come along with it. These guys bond, pull together, and... The bad guys are spoiled brat NFL players. The owner should just stay out of it. The cheerleaders... what was the point? But in the end, Reeves and Hackman are the reason to watch. It wasn’t great, but it was a lot of creative people who came together to tell a story and for that, we give it 4 stars.

It doesn't matter that this couldn't really happen. It is a great under dog story and the characters are likeable. It is also pretty funny in an offhanded way. Another of my most favorite movies.

A quote by Shane Falco --
I wish I could say something classy and inspirational -- but that just wouldn't be THIS movie's style. Pain Heals. Chicks dig scars. Falco is forever. Olé, Olé, Olé, Olé. Cheers!

I cannot tell you how much you need to see this film! I am a non-sport playing/watching female and I loved it, it should never have gone straight to video, its a classic, It is hilarious in parts, cheerleading try-outs & locker room scenes are some of my many favourite parts of this film, the romance side of it is played out perfectly, the charactors are believable and real, you really find yourself rooting for them all. You dont need to have even the slightest understanding of American Football just an appreciation for a fantastic film. I was beside myself when it came out on DVD (I had it originally on VHS)and have recommended it and lent it out on a fair few occasions now and I have yet to hear anything less that "Brilliant, loved it" from anyone how has seen it! Watch it, its worth it.
