John Gregson heads the cast as Captain Bell, skipper of the Exeter, one of several vessels engaged in pursuit of the 'indestructable' Geman battleship Graf Spee. Taking refuge in the neutral harbor of Montevideo, the Graf Spee is covertly protected by the Uruguayan government. Eventually, however, German captain Langsdorff (Peter Finch) is faced with a difficult decision: either stand his ground and fight a losing battle against the Exeter and its sister ships, or scuttle the Graf Spee and save the lives of his crew. Battle of the River Plate was released in the US as Pursuit of the Graf Spee. SCREENED/AWARDED AT: BAFTA Awards, ...The Battle of the River Plate ( 1956 ) ( Pursuit of the Graf Spee ) ( Graf Spee )

Brilliant story telling, now beautiful too
Always loved this film. Never realised fully how beautifully photographed it was. There are Blurays I have bought and not really understood what the advantage was, but with this version of the Battle of the River Plate, produced for an overseas market, I have no hesitation in recommending it. The only mystery (the only shame) is that there is no British version of this fantastic British movie in HD. But then, no mystery really when you can sell the same movie twice by bringing out one of our finest war movies abroad, and then release it again for the British market. The print consists of the original English language credits and captions, and the English language soundtrack is available. It's brilliant. And right now, I don't even resent the fact that I'll be buying it again in a year or two's time.

Hoist Battle Ensigns!
This Spanish blu-ray is a superb print and really does justice to a fine film. The use of the actual or similar Class ships of the Royal Navy is the real highlight (the less said about "Graf Spee", the better!) and the characterisations are first rate - anyone who doesn't get moist as John Gregson's Captain Bell comes up to EXETER's Bridge "Hoist Battle Ensigns, 28 knots, Port 20" is a Pinko Liberal Remainer! My only minor gripe, Spanish sub-titles do occasionally still pop up - often when there is German dialogue - but it doesn't spoil the viewing. If you love this film, treat yourself to this version.

Full HD adds a lot to this classic U.K. war film
A favourite previously viewable only on a so-so Region 2 DVD, this Region A-B-C Blu-ray variant from Spain offers a very worthwhile improvement despite some missed opportunities to clean up some details.
