Transgender Emergence: Therapeutic Guidelines for Working With Gender-Variant People and Their Families

Not for beginners
This book was recommended to me by a professional, when a relative of mine came out as trans and I wanted to be able to relate to him appropriately. It is NOT an easy, breezy introduction to the topic of transgender issues. It is academic, very dense, and took me 2 months to get through. At times the neutral writing style disguises the author's strong feelings about things like medical prejudice so you have to really read between the lines. I did end up with a much better understanding of the aspects of transitioning: medical damage, societal pressures, grief and loss, family stresses, the inner journey.

Excellent Resource for Therapists Working With Transgender Clients
Transgender Emergence has been out for quite awhile, but there is no better reference for therapists working with transgender clients or their loved ones that I am aware of. It is also good for transgender individuals serious about understanding themselves and the issues behind their changes. It is very readable, but also professional with about 50 pages of references documenting its recommendations. All that is missing is information on DSM changes since it was published and specific medical care protocols for transgender clients - protocols that are easily found on the internet.

A Great Book for Anyone Struggling with Gender Issues
While this book is aimed at clinicians , it is a great book for anyone who is struggling with understanding the gender issues that they or a loved one is experiencing. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this be the first book you read on the topic, but if you have read others it may give you new insights to the topic at hand.

More information about this important issue than you could ask for.
Lev wrote an enormously informative book that is a must for clinicians working with this population. She makes it clear that the treatments and attitudes of the past have been more harmful than beneficial and argues well that transvariance is probably much more common than previously believed.

Best book of its kind! A must read for all clinicians!
This is the best book for clinicians who want to work with transgender clients. It is becoming dated, but I still require all my interns and therapists to read it before they begin seeing our transgender clients.

Informative and essential for gender clinicians
This text provides excellent historical, theoretical and practical information about gender identity as it relates to counseling. If you are a clinician and plan to work with clients of varying gender identities you must read this book!
