Your Asphalt Shingle Warranty is Useless.
This short little book is clearly written and easy to follow. Jargon is kept to a minimum, and explained and illustrated as needed. Carter outlines his reasoning and takes the reader through each step to the conclusions. He explains the problem - asphalt shingles going bad in under ten years despite 30 year warranties - and how he tracked down what was going on. Excessive cost cutting and complex weasel worded warranties are at the root of the problem.Even if you've just put on a new roof, or don't plan on the big expense for a while, this is a very useful book for anyone who wants their asphalt shingles to do their job longer than 8 to 10 years. Carter will explain how to mitigate the problem even with your existing roof.Your favorite local roofers may or may not be aware of the problems with the asphalt shingles, as the ripoff comes from the manufacturer's end. I'm not sure they could do anything even if they did.

Some useful information.
Interesting book, especially discussing the history of asphalt shingles. Includes some good advice on selecting a product and a roofing contractor. I though the discussion on warranties was very weak - he said its impossible to prove faulty materials and go the the manufacturers websites to compare the warranties. No discussion about how to file a claim, etc.

Excellent book for the layperson on asphalt shingles, roofing, and its industry
Great short book to learn about roofing and the changes in asphalt shingles over the years. Provides thought-provoking analysis of the industry and shingle standards that will make you think twice about installing an asphalt roof. But if you still will, he also provides tips and recommendations on how to increase the lifespan of your roof. Very helpful book for the layperson to weigh the pros and cons of roofing.

A Must read
Just replaced a failed asphalt shingle roof only 13 years old. Will definitely make sure my roofer does the recommendation to extend the life of the new one. Plan to have a home built in near future and based on this book, I will rule out asphalt shingles.

I'm not disappointed! This book (I have the Kindle version) is ...
I subscribe to Mr. Carter's weekly e-newsletter, so I've followed the progression of this story as it happened, and eagerly awaited its publication. I'm not disappointed! This book (I have the Kindle version) is written in a clear and easy to read style that explains technical issues without overwhelming the reader. The book covers the history of asphalt shingle manufacturing, comparing "then" to "now" in production techniques and materials. Think of this as Asphalt Shingles 101. Mr. Carter then explains what you should look for if you're buying new shingles, and a DIY treatment that will extend the life of your shingles if you have a 7 year old or newer roof already installed.I enjoyed reading this book, and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about their roofing shingles.

Very informative and educational book about the roof over your head
Tim wrote a no-nonsense information filled book summarizing the issue of premature asphalt shingle failure and offers ideas on how to preserve the large investment many people make during their home ownership. It is well worth the read and subscription to his newsletter to stay informed and educated.

Doesn't really help you get advice on making your shingles last longer. Basically a business card because it says "if you need help you can contact me at...."
