Another old classic gothic drama that I’m really surprised to see on Blu-ray love Sharon Tate in this and flora robson , David Nivon, Deborah Kerr and Donald pleasense

A lot of people don't rate this film which is a shame. It is along similar lines to the Wicker Man which came out later and is considered a classic, and it is. But I think this film stands up on it's own without comparison to it's successor. I have to admit that I bought it because it was Sharon Tate's first major movie role and I have a bit of a "thing" about her, but it does also have Deborah Kerr and David Niven in it. Basically it's about a vineyard owner called back to his ancestral castle because of the failure of the crops. He, the Marquis (David Niven) has to deal with the failure in the "traditional" way that his family would have done. This might have been a spoiler but it's fairly obvious from the first half of the film what's going to happen. It's in black and white, which, I think, gives it an extra air of "creepiness". As for Ms Tate all I can say is she's mesmerising. Her performance as Odile de Caray is compelling. There is one scene, which I won't spoil for you, that despite the obvious continuity blips, is magic (not necessarily a good thing in the context of the movie) but pointed to a bright future for Sharon Tate, unfortunately cut tragically short.

An all star cast:David Niven married to Deborah Kerr having two wonderful children. Flora Robson the Aunt. Donald Pleasance the local priest. John Le Mesieur the doctor. Being a wealthy man and owing an country estate in France David Niven has to return there to sort some personal details out. His wife and two children come later but he asked them to stay away. Strange things happen in this villiage and it has a curse. Can it be defeated or stopped. The Eye of the Devil is a film of intersting mystery and suspicion..

Thin on extras, but it's a very good looking transfer of a very good and overlooked folk horror film.

An excellent transfer-16.3 ratio. Good crisp B/W picture, good sound. Sadly I can't be so enthusiastic about the film itself. I know this is just my personal viewpoint and many may disagree, but for what it's worth... The direction by J.Lee Thompson lacks any pace and tension (quite important for this kind of thriller). I found almost the whole cast to be miscast-Kerr and Niven utterly failed to convince as French Vineyard owning aristocrats (who are plagued by poor crops and resort to all sorts of bad acts to make them better-He does not her!). Sharon Stone, and actress I really like, is awful. I think her voice is dubbed by an English actress but I can't be certain. Hemmings is awful too, and as for Donald Pleasance, he can be so good in one film, then so really bad in the next. This is one of the bad ones! The only actors who come out of this mess with honour, and then only just, are Flora Robson and Emlyn Williams, and the 2 children who play the offspring of Kerr/Niven. This is all a pity because the film is beautifully shot on gorgeous location and should and could have been so much better. So-I can't honestly recomend this film but maybe my remarks have whetted your appetite to see for yourself? It's very rare,has Kerr and Niven, and is good quality at a fair price. As with all Warner Archive-No extras.

Really enjoyed this film I think it one of Sharon Tate best roles.When David niven character gets a summoned back home to sort the family estate he tells his wife not to come with the children but she turns up and then late at night she sees a a dark magic ritual it had a lot similarities to the wickerman but strangely was made the year before.

I really enjoyed this film. It came out before The Wicker Man but to be honest, I wouldn't want to compare the two. Everyone in the film acted their part well, though the young son took the acting honours. It's definitely worth watching and the action builds by slow but steady degrees. I've nothing but praise for the cast though I have a weakness for Deborah Kerr ever since watching The Innocents, which is a film I'd recommend anyone to watch. And then I'd recommend them not to watch The Nightcomers.

My word this is a long-winded film which out stays it's welcome by at least 30 of its 90minutes. Predating the much more effective The Wicker Man - this tale of ritual sacrifice in the French vineyards is blessed with a strong cast, excellent photography but a plodding script and direction. It's clear from the first 10minutes what is going to happen but it takes 80 more before David Hemmings fires the fatal arrow! Never highly regarded on its release this new Archive transfer - although unrestored - is fine for normal TV monitors but don't try to project it as it fades and the black levels fade away into a messy grey. Only for fans of ... Well I'm not certain who really. It certainly didn't work for us.

Muito interessante o enrêdo desta história, algo místico, fora do comum, com suspense, um grande entretenimento.

Un film dalle atmosfere misteriose già dalle prime battute.Il dvd, che presenta un master con alcune imperfezioni (qualche graffio e alcune spuntinature) conserva una definizione delle immagini e dei dettagli abbastanza ragguardevole.L'audio è solo in inglese (sottotitolato in italiano), giacché questa pellicola risulta inedita nel nostro paese.Un gradevole recupero.

Lange habe ich nach einer Kopie des Films gesucht, zuletzt wurde er im September 2001 gesendet. Wenigstens als Original liegt sie mir nun vor. Eine glänzende Besetzung und immer noch aktuelle Handlung zeichnet den Streifen aus, da stimmt alles.
