Beyond Good & Evil

It's difficult to find a video game geared toward women (a break from shooting people is a bit refreshing). In this game you'll find yourself taking pictures of rare species of creatures and also of government secrets, sneaking through secret bases, uncovering conspiracies and generally saving the day.The game was fun to play and not too difficult for the casual gamer. It's even worth a re-play.

Game came in great shape. No box, but that's no big deal as it is used.

Just as the title says to this comment, I ordered this game, but after during the first opening sequence to the game the game stopped and changed to a black screen saying that the gamecube couldn't read the disc. I tried restarting the game a few times, sometimes getting further into the game, but inevitably the same message would pop up.

Works great

Lately I have purchased a ton of GameCube games. I am slowly getting through my backlog. I just finished this game after about 12 hours of Gameplay. IGN created a list of the top 25 GameCube games. This game grabbed the #12 spot and that is truly an accomplishment considering the GameCube has over 550 titles. Besides being released on Xbox, PS2, PC, and GCN, it was recently re-mastered in HD and released on XBL and PSN. I am hoping to check one of those versions as this game was gorgeous and I would love to see it in HD.Story: The story plays out like a movie. The year is 2435. You are Jade and you work for an underground movement called the Iris Network who seeks to uncover an alien conspiracy. You are on a mining planet called Hillys. The population is anthropomorphic animals (Shark people, pig people, cat people, etc.) living with humans. An alien race known as the DomZ are abducting citizens and using them as energy or converting them to slaves. An elite military force known as the Alpha Section takes power and promises to defend the planet. The Iris Network believes the Alpha Section is in league with the DomZ and helping them abduct people. It is up to you to use your Camera and Ninja skills to expose the truth to the populous, gaining support to take down the DomZ and the Alpha Section.Gameplay: Action-Adventure, 1 Player. As Jade, you have 2 modes; Camera mode and Combat mode. With the camera, you can take pictures of all the different specials and creatures. Each completed roll of film turned into the science center will gift you a pearl. The pearl is used as currency only by the Mamago garage. You progress throughout the game by upgrading your vehicles there. The other currency is a credit account. This currency is used to purchase everything else in the game. You gain credits by successful photos, dropped from enemies, breaking crates, etc. Also while in camera mode, you gain a weapon that shoots a disc. You use the camera to aim. While in combat mode, you have a staff as a weapon. You have a special charge up move you can use. You can dodge and use combo attack sequences. You can purchase or find items that will heal you and your partner. You first start with a hovercraft vehicle to explore on the water. You also can purchase or find things to repair your vehicle or give it a short boost. There are lots of side quests in the game so I will break them down. The side quests are used to achieve your ultimate goal: getting the next upgrade at the Mamago garage (requires Pearls).Side Quests: Boat Racing- 4 races in all, winning each one will net you a pearl. Looters Den- each location you have to chase a looter who steals from you. Getting to the end of the chase will net you a pearl and some credits. Photographing life forms- you can obtain a gauge that shows you where all the life forms are that you haven't photographed yet. Each completed roll of film grants you a pearl. Getting pearls- while each side quest grants you pearls, there are lots of areas to explore that have pearls. Some areas include a volcano, back alleys in the pedestrian district, etc.Conclusion: Graphics are excellent for a GameCube game, controls are easy to use. Gameplay is enjoyable and doesn't feel repetitive in any way. If you missed this during the GameCube era (or the sixth generation console era), it is still worth picking up today and it will play on the Wii using a GameCube controller. This game will stay in my GameCube collection.Side Note: The creator of the game, Michel Ancel (also created the Rayman series) originally had this game being a lot longer and Jade being a teenage girl. At first look at E3 in 2002, it received a lot of negative reception. Because of this, Ancel shorted the game by removing long periods of exploration (because he didn't like how Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker played out) and made Jade older to be more fitting in her role. Also, Beyond Good and Evil 2 is currently under development, with Ancel as lead again. The game is far into development but Ancel last stated that he is shooting for release on the next generation consoles (Will be known as the 8th Generation consoles with the release of the Wii U, and sequels to the Xbox 360 and PS3). Long wait, but if the sequel is as good as this one, it will be worth it. Also, originally Beyond Good and Evil was planned as the first part of a trilogy, so maybe there will be two sequels in the future....
