Useful reference for making paper mache masks
Useful reference for making paper mache masks. Much of the info is available online, but this puts it all in one spot and gives excellent step by step tutorials as well as multiple recipes and handy tips to avoid common mistakes only an expert would know. Very pleased. I only used the first couple chapters, but the tutorials for the various masks provided helpful in forming my own design.

I knew I would love this book!
Recently I searched mask-making and came across a YouTube tutorial posted by Jonni Good. She was so thorough and made her techniques look so easy; I couldn't wait for her to post the next segment of the process. After watching all three YouTube posts on her Panalone mask, I bought this book. Great recipes for gesso and paste that are über easy and inexpensive. The author's explanations in the book are as concise and understandable as her tutorial videos - really, really good stuff! Lots of great photos. I recommend this book for paper mâché artists at any level. I have some experience with mask-making, paper mâché and the history of comedia del arte and I found this book to be a very worthwhile investment.Aside: Jonni Good seems to be a real animal lover. Her cat is singing (meowing) away in one of the video tutorials. Pretty funny.

Just the book I was looking for!
A detailed and comprehensive introduction to making papier-mâché masks. I needed some blank masks for a workshop I'm leading. After buying a variety of pre-made masks on line - and discovering, as Jonni notes, that they're all sized for kids - I decided to have a go at making my own blanks. This book is a great resource for a beginning papier-mâché artist, with plenty of inspiration for future mask projects.

This is a really good diy book on mask making.
I love this book! It gives you the basic instructions & a lot of neat ideas for mask making. Although, somehow the ones i have made by following the paper mache & gesso recipes, have turned out heavier than i had expected, to the point that i really should have added extra straps to hold them onto the head. I think for now, when i use these recipes, i will be making helmets instead of masks until i figure out how to make them lighter. This book made me so excited to get started that i never completely finished reading it. I guess i should finish it, it might tell me what i need to know.

This is a great book!
This is a great book!!!I've been making paper mache for decades! Has good suggestions and great pictures…My only complain is that when you get the book on a shelf, there is no tittle on the side of the book?

Good information
This book is great for getting the information that will make it actually work. If you have tried to make masks before and been unsuccessful, this is what you need. Armature is important.

Salve oh! diosa Jonni Good!!!

Interesting and Innovative
An excellent book for anyone who can't find a commercial version of the mask they want, or who just wants to make creative and economical masks. Jonni Good provides clear, careful, detailed instructions on how to use her extremely clever and innovative techniques. As well as being amply and beautifully illustrated, the book is logically laid out so the student crafter can follow the steps with no difficulty. The pages are amply large and the binding is supple, so the book is easy to prop open -- extremely helpful for any instructional book. HOW TO MAKE MASKS is a great buy!

Fantastic
Jonni's book is the best book I've found so far on mask making. Her instructions are easy to follow, well illustrated, and use materials that are easily obtainable even in the UK. The results are durable, sturdy, yet very light, and even better: once you've mastered the method the possibilities are endless and you can make masks as complex as your imagination allows! I've now got a shelf full of venetian-style masks in various stages of completion, and I only bought the book a couple of weeks ago.I found it via a video on Youtube showing Jonni demonstrating some of the methods from this book, and from there I followed the trail to her website UltimatePaperMache where you can see her current works in progress. She's very generous with advice and showing her methods, so do check it out. I'm delighted with this book, and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to start making papier mache masks.

good book
Very easy to follow instructions to make paper mache masks. The author's recipes are good and make quite strong masks with only couple of layers of paper mache. The author also gives some nice painting tips and tips on detailing masks. People living outside of the US may have to scrounge around to find good substitutes for some of the ingredients ( like here in France I really could not find equivalently strong paper towels), but in the end eveything works out.
