AMAZING DOCK--BLUETOOTH--Li-Ion BATTERY CAPABLE SPEAKER
Superb for what it is, IMO works best as an indoors close-range desktop speaker, but has some punch for other applications. It's biggest benefits are its good stereo imaging up close, extreme portability, ability to run off battery, and input flexibility...you can take it anywhere & use it with many devices. Bluetooth worked beautifully, chosen over mini-jack link. Direct dock delivers astonishing sound. It's great being able charge & listen simultaneously. As others have noted, a negative is that you can't dock your iPhone/iPod 5 with most cases on. I purchased a little Miniturtle case that snaps on the iPod back...covers the sides but not the top or bottom of the iPod, docks fine. The speaker's lightweight small size (12" wide, 4-1/2" tall, 1-1/2" deep, w/pull-out stand) truly will fit easily into backpacks, briefcases, purses, etc. As to sound... SUMMARY: REMARKABLE FOR ITS SIZE. That said, given previous glowing reviews, I bought this speaker over others because I was expecting decent loudness with smooth, deep bass. Well, you can crank it, but bass, while smooth and impressive for a tiny unit, doesn't deliver a sharp punch. If you want that punchy ooomph, perhaps try a more traditional sound delivery system. I mostly use it placed just beneath my computer monitor at work, so keep it low & handy to turn down the volume when receiving calls, & it works exceptionally well in this environment, giving clear, crisp, detailed, balanced sound, good stereo imaging that actually seems to extend beyond the speaker's physical dimensions, with fair bass. (UPDATE: I've had this about 2 weeks & sound has improved over the break-in period. Thought it was a tad bright at first, which has mellowed out.) Haven't tried it outside yet. FYI...I finally chose this more expensive, Bluetooth capable speaker over the Philips DS3205 Charging Speaker Dock for iPhone 5/iPod with Lightning Dock (around $60), which I'm returning to Amazon. The little donut dock was cute & a nice charger, but the mini-jack input didn't work, its roundish shape wouldn't fit easily into carry bags, there was virtually no - if any - stereo separation, weak bass, and sounded muffled to my ears...and no Bluetooth. If ya gotta chose one...the DS7880 is your best bet!!

Can not plug in the phone as shown
If you have a case on your phone the plug that is provided to charge your phone will not work I sent the first phone back for a warranty exchange. When I rec. the second phone and it did the same and when you plugged it in, it did not mute the phone, nor have any music from the speaker. I removed the case from my phone and it worked fine. I had to by a 1/8 inch cable to use the speaker. the tab that plugs into the phone needs to be about 1/16 of an inch longerRon

Decided to Keep it! Nice sound!
Update: I purchased the JBL Micro Wireless Ultra-Portable Speaker with Built-In Bass Port and Wireless Bluetooth Connectivity (Black)as a smaller, easier to travel with, portable speaker. I played music out of both of them interchangeably, and therefore decided to keep this Philips speaker for the sound quality. Even though I won't be bringing it hiking or anything (I'll take the JBL), I will def. be using the Philips when I do cleaning around the house or hanging out in my backyard. Such a nice speaker! & the Bluetooth allows me to bypass the annoyance of having to press buttons on the dock.---------------I bought this because I got a new job and I wanted to use it as a docking station that would play my alarm really loud to wake me up. Originally, I had just been plugging it into the wall charger and having it play from my phone. Unfortunately, this speaker silences other apps when plugged in. I use the Rise app, which I love - Traveling Winds is so nice to wake up to, and I didn't want to stray from it to an annoying alarm noise. I know this speaker is not meant to be an alarm clock, which brings me to my second point. This speaker has pretty decent sound, but if I am going to pack a portable speaker, then I prefer it to be quite small. I also think that it's a bit annoying that the stand is angled back into the speaker as it is for when you are trying to change songs, pushing buttons on your phone, etc (I have an iPhone 5).Lastly, my phone fit perfectly fine with my case on. I usually buy cases at Laila Rowe or TJ Maxx - so pretty standard cases - not otter box size though.

My Favorite iPhone 5 Speaker Dock
I had and loved the previous model Philips speaker dock for the iPhone 4 and used it for 2 years until I dropped and broke the stand off of the back of it. I was using the previous model with the 30 pin to Lightning adapter with my iPhone 5 until I broke the stand. I bought the new iPhone 5 version of the speaker dock and it has a newly redesigned stand that is much better than the previous model and the sound quality is just as good, if not better, than the older model. What I love about this Philips Speaker Dock is that it has great sound quality for the price (compared to other speaker docks I looked at) and the rechargeable battery makes it portable to use around the house as I move it from room to room. I use it in the kitchen while cooking, in the bathroom while showering, in the computer room while working, etc. It also charges the iPhone battery when it's docked whether the speaker dock is plugged in or not.The newly designed power cord for this speaker dock also has an adjustable plug that allows you to spin the AC/DC adapter 360 degrees so that it will fit into any electrical outlet configuration whether it's a wall outlet or surge suppressor.
