Chess Tactics from Scratch: Understanding Chess Tactics

This is the premier book on chess tactics. The book does a great job of breaking down tactics to an easy to understand level. Which will enhance the learning experience. Since this book can be read without a board it’s a great read when on the road or when you have some idle time. I recently went through numerous pages while a passenger on an airplane. A must have for your chess library if you’re under 2300. Even the great tactical guru, Michal Tal would study tactics by breaking them down to their basic level.

If you read and study this book seriously, your chess skills will greatly improve. Step-by-step overview of all situations at the chess board that provide chances for tactical moves. Includes a clear workbook/examination of chess tactical motifs. This is the second edition of this book, and it has been greatly improved. Will benefit players of all levels.

The book arrived in good condition. This is a good second book on chess tactics for the advanced beginner. I would recommend another tactics book such as Winning Chess Tactics or Susan Polgar's book on tactics before coming to this one.

For most chess players, the games are lost due to a tactical oversight and not a critical strategic error. Sure those do also occur but realistically even in games with a strategic flaw it takes some tactical skill to convert that advantage.Martin Weteschnik wrote an earlier book, Understanding Chess Tactics. Though not a GM or "big name" Weteschnik wrote a wonderful book. He shows how one can help improve tactical play in a systematic manner. Many tactic books are collections of positions. Here Weteschnik shows how one can learn to "see" the patterns - by figuring out target squares and patterns. All of the basic ideas are here, the pin, the x-ray and the fork but also a new term, the re-loader.The first edition is a 5 star book - this version clarifies some of the diagrams and provides little things like whose move it is; there are two new chapters and 300 new positions. As others have noted, this book was originally written the author's native language, German so at times it reads a bit stiff - maybe a more skillful translator would have done a better job - less literal and more in line with the spirit of the work.The publisher Quality Chess Books live up to their names - excellent production value. Clear text, nice paper - the one negative is the translation.

Really insightful! A good read to get more acquainted with tactics and understand their processes. I think understanding together with practice is necessary for someone who is trying to improve anything. I really recommend this book if you are seeking tactics understanding. If you are looking for practice try other books which contain only puzzles or computer based programmes like CT Art.

This book has definitely improved my skills in chess. I am only halfway through the book, yet it has still exponentially benefited me in my games. I recommend this book to anyone; beginners and experienced players will love this book.

Excellent tactics book with largely unique approach and different puzzles at least for me. Have seen a few elsewhere but only a few. Great definitions and explanations. Enjoying the book. Suited for intermediate/advanced club players.

Good book, rating wise intermediate, any complexity presented in a straightforward manner and with board diagrams every few moves instead of 10 move lines that require a physical board while playing.Improves your tactical intuition and recognition of which pieces are vulnerable and why. Then, having seen the potential tactic, you can work backwards to make it happen.

Ist ein klasse Buch zum Taktiktraining. Ich habe alle Aufgaben schon durch und nutze es trotzdem weiterhin gerne! Die Grundelemente jedes Motivs werden in einem extra Abschnitt gut erklärt und die Aufgaben am Ende sind gut ausgesucht. Wer keine Angst vor Englisch hat macht mit dem Kauf nichts verkehrt.
