It's not about sex--it's about sensuality.
Most of the reviews here are by people who were evidently expecting a soft-porn sex movie, and their disappointment tells more about them than the movie. They miss the point by focusing only on the BDSM in the relationship between Elizabeth (Kim Basinger) and John (Mickey Rourke). There is a serious, well-told story here that people apparently obsessed with sex seem to miss. The movie actually has three narrative perspectives that run concurrently through the film: the evolving relationship between Elizabeth and John; the evolving relationship between Elizabeth and the reclusive artist Farnsworth; and Elizabeth's interactions in NY art circles through her work at a gallery. In the first, John, who wears nothing but black suits and white shirts and lives in a colorless and impersonal apartment, is shown to be able to feel nothing except through extreme forms of sexual expression. In the second, Elizabeth gradually comprehends the mystical revelry of pure sensation--Farnsworth examining the fish he has caught--that also comes through in his painting. The last--Elizabeth's art world--is the intersection of the two, between the art of pure sensation and the artifice of society and its conventions. In the film, Elizabeth grows in all three narrative worlds and in the end achieves a kind of liberation of self, demonstrated by simply leaving John. The film's photography is gorgeous, using darkness and rays of light to set the shifting contexts of sensuality and sensation throughout. Rourke and Basinger are both superb in their roles--John who is painfully frozen in his incapacity to feel, and Elizabeth who grows visibly in self awareness over the course of the film. This is a spellbinding, provocative and deeply humanistic movie about how we sense the world. It bears repeated watching.

A story about primitive people
John is an emotionally undeveloped wimp who seems to have a middle brain so dead he can't get it up in life without resorting to creating artificial scenarios to provoke the most basic drives in himself and his consort. Elizabeth is an unsophisticated and clueless girl who gets wrapped up in John's web of primitive taunts, but ultimately wakes up to his faux lifestyle. The movie is well executed to the point that the whole revolting mess is loudly and proudly portrayed. It's enough to make any reasonable person peauke. Great acting and directing. You'll want to see an action flick after this story just for relief. Give a copy to your kids as a great example of how not to live life.

Sensualilty Done Well
With the sudden rise in popularity of sensual films such as the Fifty Shades of Gray franchise, it's never a better time to look back into classic films of the genre, and one of the most often referred to film from yesterday is "9 1/2 Weeks" featuring Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke. The film debuted in 1986, at a time where films of this nature were much less prevalent for the time, and thus stands out as something completely different than what most film studios were producing during the mid 80s. The film focuses on the chance encounter between John Gray (Rourke) and Elizabeth McGraw (Basigner) and depicts their growing relationship and increased experimental sexuality that is led by Gray and his desires to push McGraw to her limits. From the name of Gray alone it is easy to see that 9 1/2 Weeks played a part in influencing the the new 50 Shades franchise, however, the sensuality and tension of this film (especially for its time) definitely makes it stand above the aforementioned film franchise. If you're looking for something to watch with your partner, I definitely recommend this movie as it is a well done portrayal of the intimacy between partners and the mutual levels of respect and interest that must exist within a relationship in order to increase attraction amongst the partners.

The movie is sensual but gets boring!
Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger happen to be two of my favorite actors. Their talent is enormous & fascinating! I have a lot of their movies, Unfortunately, I felt the story line & script were just not that good. They're too good to be in it! I like to see off-beat sexual themed movies IF THERE IS A GOOD STORY WITH IT. I know a lot of people liked it and that's great but I just wasn't one of them. They are two of the best actors out there . . .can't wait to see more of their great movies! DVD delivered on time and played well.

The most erotic mainstream film ever made
9&1/2 Weeks in my opinion is the most erotic mainstream film ever made. The music, set design, cinematography, lighting, and editing, all add to brilliant performances by the actors, Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke. Many films have tried to duplicate the eroticism of this film but can't capture its true erotic potency, such as Fifty Shades. Kim Basinger's performance is the key to the film. As you watch her evolve from a shy reserved woman to a risk taking heroine in pursuit of self discovery, it has yet to be matched by another actress in a similar genre of erotic film-making. Her innocent vulnerability , her beauty, her sense of humor, and the evolution of her character is amazing. Even as a man I must say Mickey Rourke's character is so gorgeous you can't help be attracted to him even through his darkest moments. Unfortunately the film ends in a breakup after Rourke's character pushes Basinger's too far, but its a real ending instead of a phony Hollywood 50 shades BS finale. I enjoy the first 8 weeks of 9.5 Weeks and don't stay to the end. My true romantic spirit prohibits me from wanting to watch a beautiful woman saddened but this film is a masterpiece.Smokin' Joey G.
