Introducing Lacan (Graphic Guides)

This should probably be read in conjunction with Philip Hill's Lacan for Beginners, the latter of which takes a more linear, deterministic approach the likes of which Leader, in accordance with his readings of Lacan, tends to repudiate. That being said, it distills the seminars, which one should also be advised to read, into a nice exposition. The layman--and I sort of am one--should keep in mind that academics at some of the country's best universities have spent years studying these theories and still find them difficult to comprehend; one can conceivably spend years writing a Ph.D. dissertation on said theorist...the upshot of all of this being that one shouldn't get discouraged if even the ostensibly "lowly" comic book is perplexing.

I mainly bought this to get a better foundation in Lacanian psychoanalysis as I do psychohistory of Islam. This book is a really valuable introduction to Jacques Lacan, and much easier to understand than Slavoj Žižek's "Looking Awry," "How to Read Lacan," or "Enjoy Your Symptom!" However, because the book is concise, it does not cover all aspects of Lacanian thought to my dismay. I would have liked to seen Lacan's view on the Cartesian Cogito, or an explaination of Objet Petit A, or more on Juissance.

Worth reading if only for the excellent artwork. Easy to read exposition of Lacan’s major ideas. Worth reading as primary source.

The "Graphic Guide" captures many of Lacan's basic ideas with creative pictorial imaginations. I have published on Lacan myself and know very well many other introductions. You can not compare those with a Grahic Guide. That seams quite obvious to me. Therefore taking into account what a "graphic guide" can do I was astonished about the many insights this little book can convey. I know other books of Darian Leader and I think with this book he did a very good job again.

The basic information is all there, it seems. But to comprehend it, you have to deal with some bizarre syntax and poor editing (kindle edition). I had more luck reading about each subject on Wikipedia and then coming back to the book to stitch it all together. I have enjoyed other entries in this series quite a bit, so this was disappointing.

Easy to understand such difficult topic

Lacan does not really come across as stimulating in this presentation, though perhaps it is in fact informative on the life and work of Lacan.

Even if you've read the Ecrits in French, get a copy of this book. Even if only to loan out to friends. The illustrations are clever and beautiful and it's a little joy to flip through.

Has value as a summary of Lacnas works. Worthwhile as a quick summary to lead to further more advanced works

This is a good introduction however it requires further explanation to some key aspects of Lacan's thinking. I have used a second introductory guide to support my understanding of Lacan's principles. If you accept that Lacan is difficult to understand and that you may need multiple reference materials to support coming to grips with his work then this is a useful tool to that process

An ideal introduction to Lacan laced with insight,humour and an accurate delineation of the key themes that preoccupied him throughout his life .Excellent for the beginner .
