A must for old school land navigation!
I purchased this item thinking that I was going to be taking a land navigation course, and after trying it out on several different maps I am very impressed! In a world focused on GPS - and I also use a Garmin 401 - there is something to be said for the mechanical tools that were once commonplace in any NCO's kit. This is a robust tool that is easy to read and has most common map scales on it. Very useful for military, preppers, and outdoor enthusiasts! Very happy with this purchase!!

Faultless
This is a quality product, as one might expect from Silva. Yes it is more expensive than the multiple cheap alternatives, but it has a huge advantage : it works faultlessly. I learned the hard way, I initially bought a cheapo: the mechanism was so stiff it nearly cut through the maps, and daft though it may seem, the scale was wrong ( 6 miles read off an O. S. Map showed as 7.5 on the 1:25000 read off, 6.0 on the 1:20000 read off - the map was an Explorer 1:25000. One downside, it only does Km. Hey hey I'll have to go metric at last!

Not impressed
Quite expensive but not particularly well put together. Very plasticky. Overpriced in my view. Doesn’t work well on plastic coated maps. Would not buy again.

Review of Sylva map distance measuring tool
It is so inaccurate as to make it useless for measuring distances of mountain trails on 1:25000 scale maps which is what I wanted it for.
