Review A class of third graders and a class of fourth graders were fortunate to participate in a wonderful fraction experience.  Holly Young visited our classes where she read her book The Underachievers.  The story was engaging and packed with fractions concepts. Mrs. Young wove a best practice learning opportunity into the book's plot.  The students were engaged and really thinking.  After the lesson each class asked for the book and to continue working. My students were privileged to have a math experience that was fun and relevant. Well done! - Pamela C. She is passionate about using writing as a means for processing mathematics, just ask her students who have written soap operas starring quadratic equations! Using a children’s book as a motivator to learn a difficult concept is a frequent occurrence in her classroom, as is acting out a play written in math vocabulary. She believes that every child has an inner mathematician and writer. It is up to a great story to unlock that power! Read more

Four Stars
OK story, not sure the students care enough to internalize the lesson.

Wow!
Very engaging book. Read it before your children learn about fractions and you'll be able to help them on a level that will surprise you. I wish my teachers had taught me like this!

The Underachievers by Holly Young
The book is well-written, imaginative, and mathematically very helpful. Naturally I'd say that since she's our youngest daughter!. More books are to follow.

Teachers--you'll love this book when teaching fractions!
I am blessed to know the author/teacher who wrote this, but before you accuse me of nepotism, allow me to say this! WOW! This is truly a fabulous picture book with a fun story that will give teachers dozens of ideas for teaching fractions in an interesting, Common Core-friendly way. Holly is the math teacher on my teaching team (I teach our shared students English), and she shared her entire writing process with our students as she penned this book this past year. I have to tell you: when a group of young writers see their math teacher writing a book in front of them, a book that ultimately gets published...well, it was an amazing experience. I have students who realize that people can write about anything--even fractions--and they can tell a pretty great story while doing it. Keep inspiring me and our little students, Holly!

Engaging!
This is a perfect book for teaching fractions, especially when the kids start to hit the before-spring-break lull. Also, make sure you check out Holly's website (making mathematicians) for the lesson plans that go along with the book. Highly recommended both the book and the lessons!
