Erotic horror at its best
My introduction to Edward Lee was "The Pig" which I devoured greedily and chased immediately with "The Big head". I adore both of those stories and Gast is nothing like either of them. It is better. It's the best thing Mr Lee has written to date. I have read 95 percent of his works so I speak without hyperbole. Gast is just that good. While Bighead goes for violent sex and Pig humiliation sex, Gast is gloriously erotic but still manages to keep those familiar Lee themes of gross-out sex in the mix. There were several scenes in the book that were creepy as well. His characters were interesting and consistent, the plot moved along steadily and the violence and Gore was spot on.I have enjoyed Mr Lee's maturation as a horror novelist. The Lovecraftian novellas, the infernal series, flesh gothic etc. Gast is the culmination of a career of bravely fierce erotica mixed with gut churning violence, demons, ghosts, perversion, and possessed houses with peculiar door knockers. I recommend this to any horror fan, not just the hardcore readers like myself. If your tired of bloated, pretentious King novels or the same recycled turf from the same hack writer come over to the darker side of the street. Some hooligan knocked out the lamp years ago, and yeah it smells like sex, blood, and vomit...but the books are good.

Too Much
I’m a huge EL fan, and love the Infernal series and several of his other titles. However, there was too much sex in this one. I wasn’t offended, just bored. I felt that element became very repetitive and slowed the pace. If I didn’t know better, I’d accuse him of padding. The corn pone was a little thick, too. This book is similar in some ways to Witch Water but not as good. You might enjoy it if you’re already a fan, but don’t start with “Gast.”

"This is the train to the edge of madness...please have your tickets ready"
Wow! I am a seasoned (jaded) Horrorphile, and this one even shocked me! This is NOT for the squeamish or faint-hearted. Gast is a fast-paced hardcore horror/mystery story full of graphic and grizzly murders and acts of debauchery and madness. It is very well written and blended well with components of the real life history of the Civil War. This book will keep you on the edge constantly and wanting more. Be prepared for some long nights reading! I found myself very sad when the ride was over. I highly recommend this book for fellow lovers of authors: Steven King, Blake Crouch, Michael McBride, Richard Laymon, C.J. Box, and Jack Kilborn. To quote How I Met Your Mother, "Climb aboard the murder train!"

One of the best horror stories I have ever read
One of the best horror stories I have ever read ! Edward Lee has shown that he is one of the best horror writers of all time. He used all the elements that a good story should have. An unpredictable ending, past and present story scenes, and vivid depictions of scenes were extraordinary. Definitely a must read for fans of the horror genre.

Civil War , Sex ,Gore ,Violence
All I can say is wow. This book was a great read. I can tell Lee really did his research with the beer and civil war background. This book is about a small town that has a very sinister background behind one man named gast who was selected to build a railroad. Justin comes to town to write a book but becomes wrapped up in the house history. The story unfolds to a very violent and gruesome tale. Great book Lee !

Reads like a first draft
Like most of Edward Lee's works, "Gast" features some vividly memorable and gruesome scenes, as well as a lot of clever concepts. Overall, though, it's something of a mess. Characters either are wildly inconsistent, or do insanely dumb things for no real reason apart from needing to move things along from one scene to another (and believability of their behavior be damned). Also, halfway through the story, there's a couple of shifts that read like the author got some new and different ideas as to where to take the story, but never went back to the first half to account for those ideas. Overall, it's okay, but it's rough - I wish it had gotten a harder look from some editors, and another round or two of drafts would've made this very good to great instead of simply okay.

love Ed Lee, but...
Let me start by saying I have read probably 90% of Ed Lee's works and I almost always go 4 or 5 stars. This is the lowest rating I have ever given him and it's not because it was a terrible book overall, but because it is not representative of Lee.Rating just the material, I have to say it was longwinded and at times even boring. Totally not Lee! He spent too much time making sure you knew that he researched his work. He went on and on about either beer making or Cival War railroads. Alot of long unnessecary conversations. The usual sex was there, but the horror was seriously lacking! It's hard to believe this is the same author from "Flesh Gothic", my first Ed Lee book and a true representation of him. This is nothing like that or his Hell Infernal series, which is a near masterpiece of erotic horror. This book is not typical of this author, so if you like Ed Lee avoid it. And it's kinda boring and blah as a general piece of literature.

right lets see how much i can fit in this book
I can see why this book is very hit and miss with people. It's does have some of that shock factor in the story, rich and filled with history ,mush-mash of two stories coming together at the end which maybe not to a lot of people liking.if you like history of slaves and civil war with extreme shocking bit and a dash of sex then this book is for you.there are severeal stories the major stories with links this is a writter Mr Collier arrives in gast tenessee to find a local produce d veer for his book.he is being haunted by dreams and hallucinations/ghost of past involving the rail way built to transport people to a furnace for extermination during his stay. Someone asked what's this book about and its truely a book you read and has so much in it you want to throw the book at that said person as you can't possible explain everything. I haven't read much of Edward Lee but this was truely astounding for the mount he managed to fit in .you have ghosts, history of a house,History of railroad ,war, hidden religious aspects ,inspecting beers and some history in involving that, bout the people involved in both house railroad .....seriously history buff book with some extreme horror.I do feel need to warn people that are sensistive to abuse of babies as in books everyone went into incarceration

Brilliant
A disturbing novel centred around a boarding house, its dysfunctional owners and guest (the MC). The story flits between present day and the slavery days of the civil war. It has everything you'd expect from Edward Lee - Horror, sex and extreme violence, all of which are essential to the story. A must-read for his fans.

RIP Roaring!
OMG. Mr Lee is a literary wizard. I’ve read many of his books over the years and he has never disappointed me.This is a work of art in a sexual, violent, horrific sense and that’s the way I like it.The characters are well developed and the storyline is kicka$$!A must-read people.

Not for the squeamish.....
This book starts off with a jaw dropping violent, as well as, sick sexual incident. Guess what? That's just the beginning! As this story unfolds, the atrocities just compound. The sex and violence is explicit, yet Lee manages to retain the integrity of his story and it never unravels at the expense of his characters. Get ready for a wild ride!!
