Less a guide than it is a series of suggestions and pointers.
I wouldn't really call it a guide, as it has no actual point-by-point instructions. It's more like a bunch of pointers and tips. Overall it's just kind of a generic bunch of suggestions. The transmission installation guide portion appears to have been written in the mid 1990's by former Hot Rod editor Ro McGonegal, and tossed in to tick the "installation instructions" box.Overall, the book feels dated, as though the electronically controlled overdrive transmissions were added in later as an afterthought, and not a very serious one at that. It's fairly useless as trans swap/upgrade instructions, but a decent overview of what makes an automatic transmission tick and some of the differences between GM transmissions.Would I recommend it? No, not if you were actually looking for a book with instructions on how to swap to a late model electronic overdrive into an older vehicle. If you were looking for a 100 ft generic guide to the differences of GM automatic transmissions? Maybe.

As a guide, this is a great book.
As a guide, this is a great book full of history, improvements and in depth information about the GM TH700-R4, 4L60 and 4L60E as well as knowledge toward the heavy duty unit upgrades. As a manual, as I think some expected according to reviews I read, this is not, get the ATSG (Automatic Transmission Service Group) 4L60E Manual and watch videos if you need the walk-through as I did. The tips and methods Cliff Ruggles shares with close up pictures and explanations that guide you along the rebuild process as outlined by ATSG are excellent. I consider myself a good mechanic that can replace parts if I know what is wrong, most DIY mechanics do that, rebuilding a transmission is not easy- period. If you find yourself rebuilding one read this book before doing the job, keep it handy while doing the job it is a great guide as the title states. I did not read the Swapper's portion, but skimmed through it and there's good information, images and charts there as well. Enjoy, hope it helps.

not very clear for a novice, needs diagrams labeling parts, rebuild moves too fast
I bought this book to begin collecting info on my first tranny rebuild for my first restoration. I have never looked inside a tranny before other than changing fluid and a filter so I don't know what parts are what. Maybe it would make more sense if I had a tranny apart in pieces. the book would move up a star if it had a section of diagrams with labeled parts, and an exploded view of the transmission. I would like to understand what happens in a transmission, how all of the pieces function, was an expectation for a book like this. Many steps move along too fast, and I suppose some of that is the medium- a book with stationary pics versus a video; but I expected better after using cliff's book on rebuilding quadrajets which was fantastic.

Not the book to get for first time rebuilders.
Really great reference to upgrade or modify your transmission. I learned a lot from this book and will be using it more on my next build. Originally got this with another reference book thinking it would help me with the overall start to finish. It doesn't give enough info for someone starting out on rebuilding. So if you are a beginner, like me, this book will not be that useful. Now that I have a bit of experience this book can be of some use to me know. It goes into details about making upgrades and modifications to your transmission. For someone just trying to rebuild their first transmission this will not help.

Generic overview of 700/4L60E, no benefit to the rebuilder
This book is fairly generic. If you have the ATSG manual, and the internet, you can find a lot more useful information. After using ATSG and disassembling my own 4L60E I find that I wasted money on this book. Its more of a [man cave] coffee table book.you don't even need te ATSG manual if you have a factory HELMS manual for various GM cars using the 4L60E. My 1995 f-body HELMS had the exact same info as ATSG but with better pictures.

Good info but not the bottom line...
I had never rebuilt a transmission before and thought this book would help. This book will take you through most of the steps in a basic rebuild. There's a lot of good info here and a lot of good pictures but some areas are kind of vague and will leave you scratching your head. Don't rely just on this book. Get a factory service manual and anything else you can find on the subject and read them all. The factory manual is called a unit repair manual, you will need it to fill in the blanks that this book leaves.
