Hanks Surplus Cargo Travel Duffel Bag with Shoulder Straps (Small, Black)

When I started this review I was thinking, ok 4 stars. Then I tried to think of why this bag isn't a 5 star bag and I really couldn't think of any yet. I got it for a camping trip this weekend and we will see how it holds up to the rigors of that. But so far, it was bigger than I thought it would be. Which is fine actually because I was able to fit everything I need into one bag. It's not loaded with pockets, but that's ok with me. Too many pockets sometimes can be a little cumbersome. It has enough for me to somewhat organize my stuff without being too meticulous about it. The material seems to be rather durable and it seems to be crafted pretty well. But like I said, we'll see how it holds up after it's been tossed around a bit. The zippers seem to be substantial enough as well. I told my wife though, that I wish I had a bag like this when I was deployed to Iraq. Sea bags are great for general storage, but if you need something that happens to be at the bottom, you have to dump it out or dig like crazy in hopes of finding it. It has backpack type straps so we will see how well they hold up as well. Until I get back, I will try to think of a reason to make it 4 stars, but unless it falls apart or something, this is an excellent bag.**EDIT** 9/6/2013So I went on my camping trip and the bag held up just fine. I like how it fit everything I needed into one bag. It easily loses a star for the zipper pulls. About half of them pulled off. I just replaced them with 550 cord which is better anyways. I only take off 1 star because at most it was an inconvenience to fix. Also, when you purchase a product, it should work, end of story. It was pretty full and the straps seemed to hold just fine. Considering the zipper thing, I think this is still a great bag. Time will ultimately tell on the build quality, I just hope the zippers coming off are not indicative of the rest of the workmanship.

Horrible is an understatement. I bought this on a short notice for a trip out west with my unit. I was going to use a standard duffel but bought this because LBT would have taken longer to get to me than the ease of use with Amazon Prime. I painted the "bottom" of the bag with standard stencil in anticipation of leaving the next Monday. I loaded up the bag and pulled the first zipper closed and the cord attached to the zipper immediately came off. I slung the bag over my shoulder with about 50 lbs of gear in it and the strap came apart. Several weeks later when coming back to my home station, I loaded up the bag to come back and the other draw cord came off. I loaded up the bag to leave, downloaded at the other location and redeployed with this bag.......three total times opening and closing the bag and the cords came apart on two of the three pulls. I didn’t bother doing a review or attempt to return because I had to paint on the bag, unit SOP, and I had little use for the bag since then and just saw it in my storage unit as I am packing out for Afghanistan. Needless to say I will not stray from LBT and other quality products after having this bag fall apart on me. Very disappointed in this product as it is obviously built with military use in mind…..ACU pattern…….and cant handle a small CONUS trip with the weight of a typical suitcase. Don’t waste your money!

I love this bag and am using it for my school bag. It is roomy without being so gargantuan that it takes up the whole room. Durable material and accurate digital camo design. Anyone looking at this item should note, however, that it is a BACKPACK. The shoulder strap isn't convertible to single, it is a backpack. I have adapted to carry as a backpack as I really like the bag. Good zippers, good design, but had I known it was a backpack, I wouldn't have ordered it.

I purchased this bag for my wife. When we would go down to the cabin or camping she would always have her little foo foo non tactical bag. They would always get messed up because they weren't made to be tortured. This bag however showed up in a timely manner and was a lot better than I expected it to be. I'm an infantry Marine and it holds up to my standards. As for the size, it's perfect. She can fit all of her junk in it, enough stuff for a weekend getaway. (Make-up and all that crap as well) I would recommend this bag to everyone.-Cameron

Great materials & construction. I like the pockets on both ends, they're large enough to stow a good bit of stuff, & and the smaller side pockets are good for wallet/keys/phone etc. I don't like the single zipper down the middle opening, it limits your access into the bag, and the bottom of the backpack straps are to narrow and pinch on your sides when you wear it (I'm a pretty average size guy 5'8 175#)

Nice huge sturdy bag. Definitely is easy to identify at the airport luggage carousel. Would give 5 stars but like everyone says the zipper pulls come right off as soon as you pull them closed. But overall really good spacious tough bag.

Gave it to my brother for a gift and he loved it. He was able to take it on a plane as a carry on.

Build quality looks good. It is bigger than I was expecting. I guess I was looking for a size between small and large.
