There was more to the Nineties than Britpop and Grunge, don't you know?
I was listening to that Irish fella, the tall one who looks like Durer. The one who's burning up, as they say. I couldn't help thinking something unpopular: isn't this stuff a bit, well, boring? A bit safe?Who was the great troubadour singer, the tortured poetic sensibility, of my earnest teenage years? Of course! Jeff Buckley! Now is the time, I feel.I hadn't got further than Hallelujah, and Lilac Wine, before buying this triple album (the second album is actually a double). I'm so glad I did. Jeff's influences, or rather his inspirations, are wide-ranging and most intriguing. What makes him special, apart from the seraphic beauty of his singing, is his artist's instinct to push the limits, of what he can do vocally, lyrically, instrumentally. Just when you think he's going to tip over into the ridiculous, the parodic, he steers back again. He lives boldly, dangerously, excitingly. It's only too bad he decided to go swimming, in the Mississippi, at night, with his clothes on. But what he has left us is more than enough for our hearts to swell and our eyes to moisten with gratitude.
