One of the best books on LDS doctrine of God and the Christian ...
One of the best books on LDS doctrine of God and the Christian response. This book doesn't deal with the full history of the LDS church (that's White's other book) but it contrasts orthodox Christian belief with LDS teaching. The balance is fair and the citations are way more than anyone could wish for in establishing official church, doctrinal teaching. This is a must have for anyone doing anything with LDS apologetics as you will most likely be highlighting a lot. White's "equal scales" submission and response on both sides are still present. His quotes almost boarder on too many and too much. However, they more than enough establish the claims. If I could find a negative it would be that footnotes appear at the back of the book and some of them are too good not to have on the same page - a pet peeve of mine. Final Grade - A+

A well-written contrast of Mormonism and Christianity
I read this book as part of my research into the Latter-day Saint religion, and learned a great deal about Mormon theology. White has a persuasive way of using quotations to prove that Mormonism is a deeply polytheistic religion, while the Bible teaches that there is only one God. I would recommend this for both Christians and LDS.

Great, Scholarly work
James White is a staunch Calvinist. I definitely am not. I doubted I’d enjoy this book because I expected a Calvinist slant. Instead what I got was one of the finest books ever written on the topic of Mormonism. Calvinist or not, I will be purchasing more of this Christian scholars books. Highly recommended.

Great book!
The Bible is very plain in telling us how we are to act as followers of Christ. We are to "speak the truth in love"(Eph.4:15), even while we "refute those who contradict"(Titus 1:9) and "expose the unfruitful works of darkness" (Eph.5:11). Christian love does not ignore the truth, it revels in it. Indeed, there is no Christian love where truth is ignored or compromised. They go hand in hand, for "love rejoices with the truth"(1 Cor. 13:6). - James R. White

Well-researched, referenced and written
If you're after a book that narrowly focuses on the Mormon teaching on the nature of God, then this is ideal. Early on the author stresses that he will only address the Mormon doctrine of God (i.e. that He is not the only god, that he was once a man and that humans may become gods). He does this by outlining the teachings of the LDS Church and its representatives over the last 180 years, with quotation after quotation as evidence. He then compares this with the orthodox Christian view of God (i.e. that He alone is God, that he has always been such and that we will always remain human), before showing what a fundamental disparity this is.If you're after treatment of such issues as the historicity of 'The Book of Mormon', polygamy, Mormon temple ceremonies, continuing revelation, plural heavens, etc, then look elsewhere and try something like 'Letters To A Mormon Elder', also by White. The prose reveals that White is very academic and well-versed in Mormon teaching, but his writing style is never offensive or ridiculing of Mormonism - he lets quotations from both sides of the argument speak for themselves.All-in-all a good book filled with telling citations, albeit narrowly focussed on one area of Mormon teaching.
