Bryson's Dictionary for Writers and Editors

I wanted a dictionary that I could use for copywriting. It is a pretty good source for terms that a writer would want to be familiar with, though I'd recommend looking up terms that are included but not defined.Thought it a bit odd not to include definitions or references to other dictionaries where needed.

I was blown away by this. I found it useful in ways I never anticipated and learned new things about words I thought I knew. I always assumed celibacy had to do with sex. I confused it with chasteness.This has my highest recommendation; I actually found it more useful than Elements of Style by Strunk & White. So much more than an ordinary dictionary!

I purchased this book for my college-age son to use when he edits his school's newspaper. Upon looking through the book I realized that everyone should own it. This book would be useful for students of any age and would be a good book just to have around the house, too. It's fun to read and is the sort of book anyone would enjoy picking up and reading for a few minutes or a few hours. (My son was very pleased to receive it.) Highly recommended!

If you're a fan of Bill Bryson's wit and humor, then you might be disappointed. This is a reference book. And it's a good one. Which, to me, means it's useful, and in this case, dry is good.But if I have to read reference book, I want it to be written by Bill Bryson. Bryson is a master writer. This book reflects that.

Good reference book. Any book by Bill Bryson is worth it! A welcome addition to any writer's book shelf.

This book is FUN and so helpful. Keep it by my bed and read a few pages before falling asleep. I keep learning more wonderful and unique facts about language, about life, about so many things. Try it. You'll love it!May D

This is a good quick reference book. I Was imagining it would be more of a dictionary/thesaurus and it's really a short compilation of common grammar errors and explanations of what things are. For example Eurydice is the wife of Orpheus in Greek mythology. A good handbook if you don't have google handy...

My husband is writing a story and also his memoirs and loves Bill Bryson. He is thrilled with the dictionary and uses it a lot.

Some of entries are interesting: I didn't know there were two plurals of clitoris, for example.But there are many errors so it's worth checking anything odd.

Book in good condition. It came earlier than expected. Result!

This is one of those books that is really useful if you're a student of correct grammar and punctuation as I am and a pedant when it comes to using the right word in the right context. A great read and an interesting way of honing your english skills.
