Though prone to some odd outbreaks like the liripipe, Medieval costume was for the most part pretty simple, practical, straightforward stuff. But around the mid-12th century it began assuming more extreme expressions, as Tom Tierney shows in this direct chronological sequel to his  Medieval Costumes Paper Dolls (Dover Paper Dolls) . Using as his models a young ducal couple from Flanders, he portrays the "explosion of hat styles" for which the period was notable, the mutations in sleeves and in ladies' headdresses, and the greater use of pattern as weavers grew more skilled at their trade. This was an era during which people began to travel about more and styles consequently changed more often. Tierney shows us why and how, with brief but useful liner notes to amplify his always excellent art.

The charcteristics of the material (velvet, fur, gold ornaments, etc.) are - as always in the books of T.
