The Decline and Fall of the Lettered City: Latin America in the Cold War (Convergences: Inventories of the Present)

Important book
A highly readable and rigorous piece of critical historiography. Paints not only a historical portrait but also a literary one; more so it foregrounds the Cold War, a perennial blindness haunting is. Highly recommended for scholars and amateurs alike

Ideological gibberish
I actually found this book unreadable and I gave up on it after a few chapters. It is not at all clear what the author is trying to say except that (a) she hates capitalism (b) the United States is responsible for all the bad things that happen in the world, especially in Latin America and (c) that the only worthwhile literature produced in Latin America is "resistance" literature. At least this is as much as I could gather from my reading.
