With their alloy steel backs hardened to RC-60 and soft iron fronts, these chisels are a little more forgiving in use than the white paper and blue paper steel chisels. With all the features expected of a Japanese chisel, these tataki nomi have hollow ground backs to reduce friction during cutting and to make flattening the back bevel easier and the profile of the chisel is tapered for better clearance when performing deep cuts. Secured into the solid Japanese red oak handle using a tang and tapered ferrule, these chisels have a good, solid feel in use.
