Much-missed by fans of quick-jack cinema, the late Jess Franco had a career in fear that veered between arty outings such as VAMPYRO LESBOS (1971) and the cheap and cheerful projects that includes the official 'video nasty' DEVIL HUNTER (1980). Featuring a leading man turn from the Italian horror legend Al Cliver (ZOMBIE FLESH-EATERS/ THE BEYOND), DEVIL HUNTER is part Indiana Jones, part CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST (1980) and all outrageous insanity as Franco throws-in babes, bare-boobs and blood and native-battles in an attempt to keep audiences glued to the screen. For fans of cheese and sleaze, it does not get any better than DEVIL HUNTER - finally available for Franco enthusiasts and video nasty lovers to reappraise in HD!

88 Films triumph!!!
I have nothing but praise and compliments this version of Devil Hunter from 88 Films, which beats the recent USA Blu-ray release by simple means of their excellent picture grading of the admittedly badly exposed original material and whatever vault elements they could muster.Fan boys have attacked some of my past reviews of some 88 Films, so here is clear demonstration that I call out quality when it is delivered.Personal grudges by some of their contributors against me go back two decades, but I am happy to laugh it all off and sit on my very high horse. If 88 Films are reading this and would kindly take a suggestion, how about a Blu-ray of Jess Franco's 'Faceless' - unless this is already in the works with someone else?

A gloriously shambolic, Ed Wood Jr/Al Adamson /Andy Milligan B-movie tour de farce!
A trail-blazing titillator, if, perhaps, not always tasteful; that perfectly prurient, Euro-cult polymath, Jess Franco, not infrequently makes the kinda' wilfully artsy-fartsy, frequently artless, always transgressive weirdness that by its very ribald, uncompromising nature will strongly trigger the vociferous oratory of any mondo movie fan curious enough to dip into the morally murky movie miasma of Spain's premier, pop-cult sexualist extraordinaire. Even amongst ardent Franco-philes, 'The Devil Hunter' aka 'El Cannibal' (1980) is usually given brusque, short-tempered shrift, perhaps being due to the curious lack of gore, and the film's relatively mild sexploitation. So, why on earth do I love it so unreservedly? Because it is absolutely hilarious, a screamingly silly, sinfully stupefying, blissfully taste-free, trash-movie classic! A gloriously shambolic, Ed Wood Jr/Al Adamson /Andy Milligan cinematic tour de farce!Viewed purely as schlocky, monobrowed comedy it's a titanically tasteless, full-blooded hootenanny, but for those hoping for a sensationalist, sicko-splatter 'Video nasty, are in for an unpleasant surprise, since it is a dismally plasma-light, B-Movie blight, no doubt wholly deserving of censure, but, happily, a 'Cannibal Holocaust-wannabe' it surely 'ain't, since it's a laugh-riot of diabolically-dubbed hilarity! Whether anyone else enjoys this salaciously silly film as much as me isn't going to keep me up at night, but viewed askew, I'm quite sure others of a similarly 'twisted bent' might find some grimy edification in Jess Franco's long-derided, beautifully bungled, Jungle jackanapes! 88 Films have given a welcome Blu-ray burnish to a much-maligned B-Movie classic!

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus !!!
An actress is kidnapped for ransom and is taken to an island where a cannibal tribe also reside. Can the two rescuers get her out before the tribe get to her.Well what can be said about this poor use of film stock. Yes it's a Jesus Franco film so a high quality production shouldn't be expected, but this is just a mind numbingly boring film. The opening 2 scenes of a woman being chased and killed by cannibals and the actress getting kidnapped could have been filmed in a few minutes but take a very long 15 to conclude, that's a major problem with this everything is dragged out so long turgidity sets in and it's difficult to sit through. The dubbing is absolutely atrocious and sounds like the actors were shouting into the microphone, the violent effects are laughable, the blood is so thick it looks like a pale red soup & severed heads that are clearly still attached to a body and all the others are just as bad. The make-up on the monsters eyes look like Plasticine stuck on at nursery school and the soundtrack is truly nauseating. The old "favourite" the Franco zoom is seemingly in endless use here, but not just on naked female bodies (there are some disgusting shots of this and the monster who walks around naked) a totem pole gets about a dozen of them. The plot is just about serviceable but Franco takes an age to develop it tedium sets in early the 102 minute run time is difficult to do in one go. Al Cliver, Werner Pochath & Gisela Hahn decent exploitation stars are wasted in poor roles. The Portuguese locations are gorgeous though and this is one aspect Franco doesn't do a bad job of filming. How this mess was ever thought obscene, depraved or corrupt by the police or DPP shows just how idiotic the video nasty debacle was.

"..ANOTHER 80'S CANNIBAL CLASSIC.."
This movie is a little more unusual compared to your usual straight up cannibal movies from the 80's this time around we see a beautiful model who is kidnapped and taken prisoner on an island while the captors wait for their cash reward to show up, unknown to them they are close to the jungle where a tribe of devil worshipping cannibals sacrifice women to their devil god that walks the jungle and kills anyone it comes across, and of course everything goes wrong and everyone must try and survive the island, its a crazy story but yet its still a brilliant movie, great cast, lots of sexy young women, lots of female full nudity throughout a lot of the movie, its very sexploitation, there is plenty of bloody moments with women being eaten by the devil god, nothing major gory like Cannibal holocaust or Ferox, but still all good cheesy fun! the acting is hammy of course but if your a big fan of these old classics then certainly pick this one up for a good time!Directed by Jess Franco who made bloody moon another classic 80's slasher, and a whole list of other horror and sexploitation movies. This review is for the German small hardbox version, UNCUT, features include stills and artworks.98-mins, English language, 1980.

Not as scary as the cover shows.
I found the film hard to follow as the scenes were not linked and it was hard to understand what was going on. there were too many shots of natives hiding in the shrubbery without knowing exactly what or who they were or what they were looking at.
