Universal Method for Saxophone (Dover Books On Music: Instruction)

Still Useful
I used this 30 years ago while in High School and loved the exercises. My original book fell apart. It hasn't changed and I appreciate the spiral-bound version. Great for practicing and building foundational sax-playing skills.

Very good teaching method for all levels of saxophone
This is a very good way to get started on saxophone and intermediate and advanced players can use parts of the book as well. This is classical saxophone therefore if you are a jazz saxophone player who wants to study a little classical saxophone, I suggest you use a softer reed than usual to make it easier on some of the studies and also you won't be playing anything higher than high F. One thing that is lacking is there is no saxophone fingering chart (at least in my version) which is surprising. For a beginner that is necessary and should be added to the book. For the price of the soft copy a great bargain and definitely worth the money. 4 1/2 stars, take away a 1/2 star for not including the fingering chart.

Spiral bound a must!
I remember using this back in my younger days and at that time I had the glue-bound version. It fell apart after continued use. This spiral bound option is the way to go. Print is good. This is a classic but I do not recommend it for beginners unless you are under instruction of a teacher and guided in using it effectively.

A classic, with lots of exercises.
I knew I needed a book like this as I have not played in almost 50 years. This is an old book, I believe from 1905. The drills are useful, but I would have given this book a higher rating if it had more on musical notation. I needed a refresher on actually reading and identifying notes and this book did not have that, it expects you already know all your fingering and can read music. That was easily remedied with some free online lessons but still. Most younger people will find this boring, lots of exercises and the few songs it has are old opera and classical works from the 1800's that probably won't have much appeal. I still think it is useful, but might be best used in conjunction with a song book with more contemporary music to keep it fun. Books like this, not properly used, have probably turned more young people off of music than anything else. While necessary, endless repetitive scales and exercises can kill the enjoyment of learning music if not combined with some songs that someone actually wants to play. If this book were to be updated with some songs more familiar with today's beginners, it would be great.

Saxophone Bible
There is a reason that this is considered the Saxophone Bible. I played in high school and picked up the horn again. Wanted a book to work on my chops again, and this was recommend. Book is excellent. I wish I had it in high school. I would have improved so much farther than I did. Play 30 minutes out of this book with a metronome every practice session, and you'll be doing great.

Wow...very comprehensive!
This book was recommended for my daughter by her saxophone instructor. I've looked through the book extensively (it's a rather large book), and I'm amazed (yes, I have a background in music). If a dedicated sax player works through this book and follows the practice recommendations, they would be a great player at the completion of this work.It may be a little overwhelming to some students when they look through it, but my daughter is always looking for a challenge. For this type of student, I believe this is a great book.I can also see this work as an invaluable tool for the instructor. No wonder it's been around since it's first publishing in 1908! Great works truly withstand the test of time!

So confusing
This is not for beginners but if you already know a lot about reading music it might be very helpful.

It's great! All in one: Beginner level to Pro
This book is very well-organized in terms of how it starts out and how it progresses into complexity of music. It starts the book giving the basics and ends with a pro. Its main goal is to give all the resources any striving alto saxophonist would ever need in one book. You do not need to purchase multiple levels of books if you have this one. It has it all.

Horrible book. I returned it.
This book had nothing but some sheet music. It has no instructions at all for playing saxophone.

Traditional "Old-School" method of learning and practising the saxophone
This music book contains page after page of practice drills and exercises. There are plenty of similar books available, but this is over 300 pages long and is thorough in its coverage and is well thought out in terms of the topics. It is suitable for beginners, and above, and the exercises are progressive in their complexity. There is some music theory to support the exercises, but this is primarily a practice book. If you are looking for inspiration for practice drills, then this could be helpful. But there are better books for teaching you how to play.

Not Complete...?
The book has no basics and advances too quickly for a beginning player to understand. It seems the first 12 pages are missing from the book entirely. There are no fingerings for a student to learn from throughout the book. It starts right away with scales and doesn't have anyway for a student to understand how to play them in the first place. It has a lot of great exercises but they are traditional exercises and has absolutely no introduction to jazz, improve, over blowing, and maintenance of the instrument. I'm not sure that I agree with the title "universal" method.
