One of the OG New Adult Authors. Loved this Book. Ends on a Cliffhanger.
The best thing about getting into a book slump, is the chance to go back and finally read those books from authors that you loved and have had sitting on your devices for a while. One of my early New Adult authors was Jessica Sorensen, I loved all her books as they are so easy to read and hit that exact spot of edginess. In Unbeautiful, we first meet Emery who lives in a strange town filled with rules and they take pills etc. It seemed like a bit of a cultish town. Emery can't wait to escape as she hasn't seen her brother in 6 months and she feels like she is losing control and herself and wants more. Emery then decides to apply for a college outside of the border and gets in and moves into the dorm. Finally, she is free from her family and mother's spies, or so she thinks. Ryler was hurt from an accident during foster care - he prefers to keep his voice to himself and now is a mute and signs. He also works as an informant for a dangerous man as he is trying to survive. From his first meeting of Emery, he can tell there is more than meets the eye and the pair connect. The pair are trying to survive and live their lives, but what happens when Emery and Ryler's lives crash when they both discover that Doc and Emery's Dad are the same person. Can Ryler protect Emery when she starts to receive threats? Will Emery let Ryler when she learns that he works with her father? Also why is Emery taking the pills and where is Ellis - they were the big questions which I hope get answered in Book #2. What I also loved about this book was Ryler's friends included Luke, Violet, Greyson and Seth which we had met in a couple of the previous series by Jessica Sorensen. I am now looking forward to reading the next book in this series by Jessica Sorensen and fingers crossed for a happy ending for both Emery and Ryler. PS – I have a cover crush on this book.

Different, yet incredibly interesting!
I have probably read around 10 of Jessica’s novels, which doesn’t touch the surface of all that she offers. If I am having a difficult time finding something to read, she is one of the first authors I look to find that perfect book. She does a fabulous job engaging the reader in all of her books, I have never read any that I felt stuck in. She has written many series which I absolutely adore such as: Death Collectors (x editions), and Ella and Micha. Both of these for the romance lover are perfect, and you don’t have to give up the characters after one book!Unbeautiful takes place in a seemingly twisted world, and is told through both Emery and Ryler’s point of view. Emery lives her perfect world, but she is really just a shell of who she really is. Her Father and Mother treat her poorly as if she is fragile, but yet with aggression. She has a brother that she hasn’t seen in a long time, she worries about what has happened to him. Emery is given pills by her mother, and she stops taking them because she thinks she is losing her reality. She constantly battles the past and what is real, she finds some solace in her writing.Ryler is one of the most interesting characters as he can’t speak, he has to sign or mouth words to people. He served some time and just wants to be done with the rough gambling lifestyle he has been living. Yet, he still can’t keep everything at bay…it seems like he always has to be involved, no matter how hard he tries.Unbeautiful took me on a ride to alternate reality, where I am unsure what is really going on with Emery. She has so many things buried deep in the poetry she writes, you as a reader have to pay attention. The only reason I gave this a four not five stars was simply that I felt it took a while to get to the important details of the story. Before I knew it I was at the end of the book not sure where to go from there, as I didn’t feel like there was much resolution. Don’t worry though, it’s still worth reading! I dove into detective mode trying to figure out what really happened to Emery. Is her Dad evil, and is her Mother making up stories? Why did Ryler lose the ability to speak? Are they all connected in the bigger picture? These are all questions you will be asking yourself, but as the story fleshes itself out it slowly unravels. Also, Untamed is releasing soon so the reader doesn’t have to wait too long for resolution. I just love Jessica’s writing, I feel like she really pushed herself with this book! I haven’t read anything by her quite this dark and twisted. I think as she normally writes more HEA, this was a good risk for her. Unbeautiful isn’t the typical romance where the reader swoons for hours over the love senses. This is a slow built up, and then a combustion with a smoldering effect. Both Ryler and Emery have the world against them, will they find a way to be together?

4 "Unquestionably Beautifully Intriguing" Stars!
Just what is going on in the small town of Ralingford, Wyoming? In a style somewhat reminiscent of a younger version of The Stepford Wives, Emery is expected to be the perfect model daughter and girlfriend, the chief qualities of which are demanded of her are strict obedience and adherence to all measures necessary to remain utterly beautiful. But just what dark secrets and imperfections lie beneath this mirage of perfection? So many questions and an infinite number of possibilities abound in this highly unique read. One thing is a given though, if you want to learn the answers, you will need to read the conclusion to the UnBeautiful Series in Untamed which releases February 27, 2015.Emery appears to have the perfect life. Beautiful like no other, head cheerleader and girlfriend of the captain of the football team (who also happens to be the son of the town's richest lawyer and close acquaintance of her father), one would think she wouldn't have a care in the world. Nothing, however, could be further from the truth. Emery yearns to run away from the cuffs that bind her. But nearly no one ever leaves Ralingford. Determined to finally gain control over her life, Emery ceases her opportunity shortly after high school graduation, when during one of her father's business trips, she moves out of town purportedly under the guise of wanting to attend a university (rather than the town's community college). There she meets Ryler. Sporting tattoos, a lip piercing and other immeasurable scars, Ryler is exactly the type of imperfect man that Emery's family would expect her to steer clear from. Emery, however, views an unconventional beauty in Ryler that draws her to him. Not even his arguably biggest flaw, that he can no longer speak, can keep her away. Finally free, she gets to experience her first few moments of true pleasure and beauty with Ryler.Ryler, however, is leading a double life and soon the dark forces that previously controlled her world and Ryler's double life intersect, to call everything back into question. Will Emery and Ryler ever be able to truly break free of their pasts in time to find a HEA? Moreover, just what exactly is the extent of the dark past that Emery is running from?Lovers of twisty, mysterious, suspense intensive romances will not want to miss Unbeautiful. Angsty, fast-paced and creative beyond compare, I can't wait to read Untamed to see how all the pieces of this complex puzzle fit together.

Loved it!
I put this book on my wish list months before it came out. I was undecided if I wanted to read it, but now I have I've loved every bit of it! So much drama with Emery, it's not predictable at all. Can't wait for the next book!I can't think of a bad thing to say about this book. I would definitely recommend it.

another great 5 star read
WOW never read a book with so many questions but hardly any answers just clues of what is to come. I wanted to reach in the book and tell them what's going on. Need to know who's really who and what's going to become of Emery and Ryler. Loved the story line and characters can't wait to read more.

I love Jessica Sorensen books but not since the fallen star seeks have I been so gripped. The characters the mystery the romance all have me hooked. The book is too short however I finished it in a couple of hours but will be buying the next straight away

A big fan of Jessica sorensen
After the resolution of Callie and Kayden I was a little dubious but I LOVE this book. So many questions. I can't wait for answers. Poor Ryler, poor Emery. Great writing style, keeps the reader interested from the offset.
