**Q: Is this attracted to the stud itself, or a nail in the stud?  How is this different from using a small magnet to find the nails (my current method)?**
A: The Studbuddy attaches to the fasteners in the wall. The differences I can see is that since this stud finder's base is plastic you run no risk of scratching the paint, also, the Studbuddy is about 6 inches long and you may find a screw or nail more easily than with a smaller magnet.
