Incredible value. Heil does it right.
A few years ago, I owned the Heil PR40. I loved that mic. Every recording was crisp, clear and had excellent tone. I ended up selling it because I could not justify owning a $330 mic for what I was doing. The mic held its' value and I was able to get a good price when selling it (about $250). Basically, after selling, I felt like I was able to rent an excellent microphone for two years for around $80. I replaced the PR40 later with a Rode Podmic. This is a very good microphone, but simply did not have the sound quality of the PR40. Recently, I was able to save a few dollars up and I decided to purchase the PR30 as it was getting very good reviews. I have to say, when recording and editing, this mic, from memory and from comparing with old recordings on the PR40, sounds just as good as the 40. -At least in spoken word. It sounds miles above the Podmic for sure. This is a great product and I don't plan to sell it at any point in the future. I will be holding on to the Podmic as a backup or possibly to be used in a second setup.

Just what I needed.
Clarity and great sound. Allows me to record in my less than ideal space, while helping to minimize mouth noises.

Heil Sound PR 30 Mic
I really like this mic for my male voice. It is an end fire design so you point the end at your mouth. Handles breath pops well and seems rugged enough. Great meaty sound and works well for my narration and promo work. When combined with my Voxbox, is a great combination (as is most anything with the Voxbox). Also great with female voices. Compared to the PR40, which has a faster transient response and more top end, it is a great and rugged travel mic. Heil Sound PR 30 Large Diaphragm Multipurpose Dynamic Microphone I have clients who prefer the PR30 for singing vocals, voice overs, commercials, narrations, audiobooks and dramatic readings. Because it has a reduced top end it has less digital "buzz" or crackle than the PR40 or large diameter condenser mics. As a dynamic with a high output, I don't always need to use the Cloud Lifter like I do with the PR40.

Somewhere between and above an SM7 and a 421
On a Vox AC30 (so far) This mic sounds somewhere between an SM7 and a 421. It has much hotter output than the SM7 with the low end focus but none of the nasalish presence peak. In the mid/high range it takes on the character of the 421.I bought it primarily for live guitar cab micing and it's been a solid performer. The reports from FOH have all been very good. I prefer it to the SM7 as it requires less gain at the desk/mic pre. I'm also going to try it for VO vocals. While I use an 87 a lot in this application, it's not always ideal. So this may be the ticket. Also looking forward to trying it on tenor Sax.
