Great tool
For doing repetitive measurements it works like a champ. I just wish there were a book or pamplet on how to use this tool to its full advantage?

Not a precision tool, expect to measure anyway.
You are still going to have to measure between your holes to get them to line up at exact measurements due to a bit of slack in how this (de)compresses. it kind of defeats the purpose of what this is for if you have to measure between each hole anyway but its not loose enough to where you can use it to transfer measurement once you do go through and check them. If you dont care about accuracy and just want holes that at first glance look decently spaced out to the naked eye then this works fine. The steel itself is good quality but the riveting protrudes enough so this wont lie flush against a planar flat surface. Im not sure its worth the money in retrospect but I havent had enough opportunities to make use of it over say, a trammel set.

3 stars because of two reasons: 1) It's made in Taiwan, so to me, the price seems about double what it should be for an imported cheap tool. 2) The fan's tolerance leaves some room for improvement. What I mean is that when the fan is extended, there is just enough slop to allow one half to extend more than the other. You can avoid most of this if you're very careful about applying the same amount of tension to each side when extending. It's not enough to throw it off by more than maybe a 1/16", but still noticeable, so don't expect it to hold an exact spread from one panel to the next. Consider it a one-off measurement tool and not for jig/production work.

Dividers?
Meh...for aircraft repair we use a set of dividers to do the same thing. You just gradually adjust the spacing and walk the dividers along the path until you hit the end. As a bonus, you can also evenly space things around curves. General Tools 450 6 6-Inch Flat Leg Divider
