Q: Is there any method for determining the mounting locations?

What i did was hold lid and hinge to chest and marked how it would open i advise usibg glue to screws to keep them secured

Our lid weighs maybe 20 lbs and we installed 2. It still wouldn’t hold it up.

Q: The last photo makes it appear that these hinges, when opening, pull the seat inward away from a wall. Is this a feature?

That is correct. It is designed to pull away so that you can put the chest against the wall. They aren’t as strong so we also kept our locking mechanism on it.

Q: How far away from the wall does this pull the lid? I would like to use this for a lid that is 1.75" and want to make sure it will still open.

Ours is 3/4” lid, and it may have a 1/4” between the lid and the wall. That, and I don’t think it is strong enough to hold that thick of a lid.
